Pepi, Agyemang among players with most to prove in USMNT’s March window

Wait 5 sec.

The U.S. men’s national team are days away from kicking off their final four matches ahead of the FIFA World Cup and for several players, this will be their last chance to impress Mauricio Pochettino. From Ricardo Pepi to Patrick Agyemang, every player will be seeking to deliver a strong window this month with upcoming matches against Belgium and Portugal coming in the next few days. Although plenty can still change by the time Pochettino names his World Cup roster this May, most of the key figures in Pochettino’s player pool should be determined by month’s end. Here is a closer look at five players with the most to prove during the USMNT’s March window:Ricardo PepiFolarin Balogun is the USMNT’s No. 1 striking option but the race for the No. 2 spot remains wide open. Ricardo Pepi will be fighting with Patrick Agyemang for opportunities during this camp, as both players seek to boost their stocks. Pepi did not feature much for the USMNT during 2025 and is only a few weeks back in action following his broken arm earlier this winter. Although Pepi has been back amongst the goals for PSV, whether or not he stays there remains unknown for the final months of the season. A strong window from Pepi could certainly solidify his spot in Pochettino’s May roster.Patrick AgyemangPatrick Agyemang has fought his way back into the USMNT mix, a spot he hopes to keep going forward.Agyemang’s goals have dried up a bit for Derby County, but he is continuing to play weekly for John Eustace’s Rams. Haji Wright’s recent groin injury may have also benefitted Agyemang’s inclusion into March’s roster, with both players fighting to for the No. 9 role going forward.Unlike Pepi, Agyemang scored five USMNT goals in 2025 and was a big part of Pochettino’s plans when healthy. However, there isn’t a guarantee that Agyemang makes the final roster, even if the goals start coming back in England over the final few months of the EFL Championship campaign. Gio ReynaMauricio Pochettino didn’t seem to worried with Gio Reyna’s lack of playing time at Borussia Moenchengladbach, but it seems hard to believe that the Argentine head coach will stick with Reyna long-term. Reyna has played just 27 minutes for the Bundesliga club in 2026, continuing what has been a disappointing loan spell from Borussia Dortmund. However, Pochettino seems very high on Reyna’s abilities with the USMNT going forward, which is a major boost to Reyna’s World Cup chances. Reyna will need a strong window this month to truly pad his stock in Pochettino’s plans, knowing that a quiet window may hurt his chances big time. Auston TrustyIt’s unclear whether or not Pochettino will take five center backs to the World Cup, but if he does, Auston Trusty will be in the mix for a spot. Trusty has continued to be a consistent starter for Scottish side Celtic this season, filling in for the injured Cameron Carter-Vickers. The American defender did not play in a recent loss to Dundee United, but has done a solid job in staying active across multiple competitions. Noahkai Banks’ international future remains unknown, but should he decide to stay away from the USMNT, Trusty will be fighting for a World Cup spot this summer. Alex FreemanAlex Freeman’s move to Spanish club Villarreal was filled with excitement but his lack of playing time is worrying. Freeman has played just 48 minutes since joining from Orlando City this winter, mainly featuring off of the bench. The former MLS homegrown delivered a productive 2025 with the USMNT but will now try to fend off Tim Weah, Joe Scally, and others for minutes at right back/right wing back. Sergino Dest still has a point to prove when he gets back on the field, adding a further obstacle for Freeman to leapfrog.
