A new initiative is encouraging older adults and vulnerable individuals in Malta to lace up their boots and get back into the game, with a special walking football open day later this month. The event, part of the WALK FIT project, will take place on Saturday 28th March between 8am and 12pm at St Klara Primary School.Organised by Swieqi United Football Club in collaboration with Italian partners A.S.D. Real Sala Bolognese, the initiative aims to promote active ageing and social inclusion through sport. The open day is aimed at adults aged 50 and over, as well as younger vulnerable adults, giving them the chance to try walking football in a safe and welcoming environment.Walking football is a slower-paced version of the game, designed to reduce physical strain and lower the risk of injury, making it ideal for those who may have stepped away from sport over the years. The event follows earlier training sessions held in February, where local participants were trained as coaches and referees to support the growth of the sport in Malta.Beyond fitness, organisers say the initiative is about much more, highlighting benefits such as improved mental wellbeing, social interaction, and a stronger sense of community. The WALK FIT project also has an international element, with activities taking place in both Malta and Bologna, aiming to share ideas and create long-term opportunities for participation. It will all lead up to an international walking football tournament in Malta later this year, bringing together Maltese and Italian teams.Best of all, the open day is completely free, so anyone interested can simply turn up and give it a go.Tag someone you want to go with!•
