Holy Week To Feel As Cold As -1°C With Force 7 Winds Forecast

A blast of unusually cold weather is set to hit Malta from later on Tuesday 31st March, with forecasters warning of strong winds, isolated showers and rough seas lasting until Good Friday morning.According to forecasts, a deep longwave trough will move into the Central Mediterranean, dragging in a cold polar air mass and bringing a sharp drop in temperatures just as April begins. The most severe conditions are expected on Wednesday and Thursday, when a very strong northwesterly Force 7 wind is forecast to batter the islands. Exposed coastal areas are also expected to face rough seas.Alongside the strong winds, isolated showers are likely, some of which could turn thundery and may even bring graupel- small soft hail-like pellets that can occur in colder air outbreaks.Despite the time of year, forecasters say this could bring the coldest weather Malta has seen so far in 2026. Daytime temperatures are not expected to rise above 15°C, while conditions at night could feel significantly colder due to the wind and damp air. With the added effect of wind chill, temperatures could feel as low as -1°C, as reported by Maltese weather page MaltaWeather.com on creating conditions that are likely to feel especially harsh and unseasonably cold for early spring. The outlook, however, improves in time for the Easter weekend. Fine weather is expected to return from Good Friday evening onwards, which should allow Easter processions and other outdoor celebrations to go ahead as planned.Further updates are expected as the weather system approaches.Share this with your household•
