Julian Galea, a young man who, until three years ago, lacked confidence in his abilities and had held back in sports will now be taking on a 100km run in support of Caritas Malta. The Director of Caritas Malta, Anthony Gatt, praised Galea’s inspiring commitment. He explained that funds raised from the run will strengthen Caritas’ psychosocial services, which are provided free of charge to those most in need. These include daily support group meetings at the community centre in Ħamrun, services for individuals dealing with separation or bereavement, mental health and substance-use support, as well as groups for people facing various emotional challenges. Additional support is offered through counselling and social work services.“Julian, together with the Underdogs OCR team, which trains with him, has become a partner of Caritas Malta. Beyond raising funds, this initiative encourages more people to participate in physical activity, and Julian’s run could inspire others to begin similar pursuits. Caritas Malta greatly values these initiatives as they inspire volunteerism, promote a natural high, and keep people away from substances. Julian started from scratch, and in just one month he will be running 100km,” Gatt said while introducing Julian.Galea shared his journey, explaining that around two and a half years ago he joined the OCR Underdogs team and began with modest gym training.“At first, I was ready to give up, but thanks to my coach, Charles Calleja, I began to believe in myself and participated in the first edition of Caritas Run For Life in 2023. I wanted to do something for those most in need, and I chose Caritas because of the incredible good it does in society,” he said.Coach Charles Calleja provided logistical details, explaining that Julian will complete 20 laps of five kilometres at Ta’ Qali, maintaining a pace of approximately seven minutes 30 seconds per kilometre. This setup allows participants to join him at different time slots, as Julian passes the starting point roughly every three quarters of a lap. The run will begin at 2am on 26th April, with the 100 kilometres expected to be completed between 3.30pm and 4pm.“It is a major challenge for Julian, progressing from a 5km race to this 100km run. But with consistent training and dedication, he will achieve his goal. This is why the theme is ‘Courage to Go the Distance’,” said Calleja.People interested in joining can register for time slots via the Underdogs OCR social media channels.Donations can be made via Revolut and BOV Pay using the number 99014928, or by bank transfer to the BOV account: MT33VALL22013000000050023814032 with reference 100km run.Tag a friend to let them know•
