One of the most deeply-rooted perversions of the American psyche is the low-level belief that somehow, one day, everything will all work out and you’ll be fabulously rich. Maybe even a billionaire! Newsflash, it’s never gonna happen. This seductive lie is how conservatives get huge swathes of voters to fight directly against their own interests. National healthcare that’s free at the point of service? Sure, that’s what pretty much the entire rest of the developed world currently enjoys, but what if I get rich and then have to pay for a poor person to get chemotherapy? Affordable housing? But what if one day I become a property tycoon?! Social security nets to support those in hard times? Well, that’s certainly never going to be me! Didn’t you hear, one day I’m gonna be a billionaire! Bernie Sanders has been beating this drum for years, but Americans don’t seem to wake up to reality. For his efforts, he’s been pilloried as both a radical communist (he’s a Democrat socialist who would be essentially a centrist in most other Western governments) and, somehow, bizarrely, apparently also a secret billionaire himself. “SICK AND TIRED of endless wars” Now Sanders is laying it out as simply as possible for those who still need their heads bonked together: Health care? "You're on your own."Housing? "Nothing we can do."Grocery prices? "You're out of luck."$200 billion for another war? "No problem!"Americans—Democrats, Republicans, independents—are SICK AND TIRED of endless wars.We need to invest here at home.— Bernie Sanders (@BernieSanders) March 26, 2026 “Health care? “You’re on your own.” Housing? “Nothing we can do.” Grocery prices? “You’re out of luck.” $200 billion for another war? “No problem!” Americans—Democrats, Republicans, independents—are SICK AND TIRED of endless wars. We need to invest here at home.” He’s absolutely right. For example, in the early days of Donald Trump’s war with Iran, Kuwait shot down three F-15s in a “friendly fire” incident. Trump shrugged and wrote this off as “a little mishap”. That “friendly fire” will cost the US taxpayer $300 million, roughly enough to construct ten new fully-fitted elementary schools. Heck, each missile launched at Iran sees around a million bucks go up in smoke in an instant. And for what? It’s increasingly apparent that Trump is trying his best to wriggle out of the war he’s started, so the result will likely be the same theocratic regime, except now a burning hatred of America is baked into new generations of Iranians. I can’t believe the Trump admin, supported by Republicans, are blowing nearly $2 billion a day in an unprovoked war against Iran for Israel yet refuses to use the power the American people gave them to govern and fund our own Homeland Security. All they have to do is override the…— Former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (@FmrRepMTG) March 26, 2026 Also, in a weird twist, Sanders’ message could have also just as easily have come from the likes of “America First” Marjorie Taylor Greene. The two couldn’t be further apart on the political spectrum, yet both recognize that regular Americans are going to suffer as a result of Trump’s pointless and destructive war, and both agree that American taxpayers’ money should be spent on making Americans’ lives better. For Trump, the troubles of folks like you are irrelevant. Voters have already put him in office, so he does not need you anymore. All that matters now is stuffing his bank account with your money, and from that perspective, his presidency is a dream come true.
