Prices fell below $4,200 per ounce, the metal's lowest point since late 2025, in one of the steepest five-day declines in over four decades. For an asset that began 2026 as a consensus long and a perceived safe haven, that kind of move tends to shake conviction.It shook mine, briefly.But a sharp bounce followed news that the US had signalled openness to negotiations with Iran, and UBS's latest research note makes a credible case that the underlying thesis for gold remains intact. The bank is forecasting prices at $5,900 per ounce by early 2027, against a current spot price of around $4,470.Why the sell-off happenedThree forces converged. Rising energy prices reignited inflation fears, pushing markets to reprice Fed policy from two and a half rate cuts expected in February to a small probability of a hike by year-end. Nominal bond yields climbed above breakevens, the dollar strengthened, and together those conditions are precisely what gold hates.Then physical demand took a hit. Dubai sits at the centre of global gold trade, and the broader Middle East accounted for roughly 270 metric tons of demand last year, close to 10% of worldwide consumption. The Iran conflict disrupted that channel. On top of that, about 62 metric tons were divested through exchange-traded funds in March alone, effectively wiping out year-to-date inflows.Is this a Volcker moment?That is the question UBS is asking directly, and its answer is no. When US Federal Reserve head Paul Volcker tightened aggressively in 1980, gold fell 50% over two to three years. The 2013 taper tantrum under Ben Bernanke knocked prices nearly 15% in weeks. Both episodes involved a decisive, sustained shift in real interest rates.What the bank sees today is more contained. Current Fed chair Jerome Powell has signalled that cuts may be delayed, but there has been no clear pivot toward hikes. The current correction, 10-15% from recent highs, is modest compared to those historical drawdowns, even if the speed has been unsettling.The argument for staying inGold tends to perform best during the second phase of a crisis, when growth weakens and central banks ease. That moment has not arrived yet. UBS forecasts 10-year Treasury yields falling from 4.42% to 3.75% by year-end, and the euro strengthening from 1.15 to 1.20 against the dollar.
