Singer Derrick Ddungu, popularly known as Rickman Manrick, has offered a thoughtful reflection on the current state of Uganda’s music industry, saying he believes it is steadily rising to greater heights.In his view, the industry is experiencing an exciting upward trajectory, fueled by a wave of emerging talent.He points to artists like Joshua Baraka, who have successfully crossed into the international scene, as proof that Ugandan music is gaining global recognition.Rickman revealed that he recognized Baraka’s potential early on. The two connected around 2021 through a mutual friend—Baraka’s manager—and went on to record several songs together. Even then, Rickman says, it was clear Baraka was destined for bigger stages, and his subsequent success has only confirmed that belief.My music is registered in Sweden. Every day that passes by, the industry elevates. We have artists who have broken through to the international level, like Joshua Baraka. I met him around 2022/21.His manager is my friend because he’s the one who linked us, and we recorded some projects back then, like 3 songs.We spotted his talent back then when I was still dating Sheilah Gashumba, and he has not disappointed.Beyond music, Rickman also shared a glimpse into his personal journey. At one point, he attempted to pursue studies in Sweden, where his music is officially registered. However, he eventually stepped away from academics after realizing the challenge of balancing school with his demanding lifestyle. Between music, football, and boxing, he found his time and focus stretched too thin to sustain it all.I tried pursuing a course at the University in Sweden, but somehow, I quit after realizing that I couldn’t balance books and work, yet the demands were many since I had to juggle music, playing football, and boxing, all of which needed concentration. Looking ahead, Rickman disclosed plans for collaborations with notable artists such as Lillian Mbabazi and Lydia Jazmine, alongside introducing fresh talent to the public. An-Known Prosper admits he wasn’t ready for fatherhood, now embracing itPassionate about growth and collaboration, he emphasizes his desire to share platforms with both established and upcoming artists.This year, however, his music will carry a more personal touch inspired by his current relationship. Rickman is focusing on crafting and releasing love songs for his upcoming album. This year, I have music collaborations with Lillian Mbabazi, Lydia Jazmine, and some other fresh artists that the nation has yet to know.I always want to share a platform with such talented people.
