For 33 years, Jurassic Park has been the absolute, undisputed apex predator of dinosaur movies. The first film, released in 1993, was an instant classic that also transformed cinema as we know it, ushering in the (never-ending) era of CG blockbusters.Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi film, based on Michael Crichton’s bestselling novel of the same name, pioneered ground-breaking special effects — both practical and digital (courtesy of Stan Winston and Industrial Light & Magic, respectively) — and also gave birth to a multi-billion-dollar franchise that continues to turn in huge numbers at the worldwide box office.Credit: Universal PicturesThe Success of Jurassic ParkThe series continues to claw in hundreds of millions worldwide, with the latest film, Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), having devoured $869.1 million last year (even if it was considered a stinker by fans and critics). Collectively, the seven films have grossed several billions of dollars globally — and that’s just on the theatrical side of things.Jurassic Park even has the monopoly on dinosaur franchises in other media, from video games like the Jurassic World Evolution series to animated shows like Netflix’s Camp Cretaceous and Chaos Theory. And then there are the theme parks, with Universal Studios boasting several Jurassic-themed areas and attractions across its global destinations.Credit: Inside the MagicRelated: ‘Jurassic Park’ Officially Hitting Reset After ‘Rebirth’ Ruins Film SeriesOther Dinosaur Movies Have FailedNo other studio has ever really attempted to take the spotlight away from — or even share it with — Jurassic. If you don’t have a solid concept that you’re ready to market the hell out of, it’s probably wise to stay clear of this franchise on the big screen. We’ve had a few dinosaur movies since the original 1993 film. Recent years have given us the likes of 65 (2023) starring Adam Driver (a total dino dud) and the equally forgettable Meg 2: The Trench (2023). Peter Jackson’s King Kong (2005) perhaps remains the only live-action film with dinosaurs that comes close in terms of vision, quality, and success.Credit: Universal PicturesA New “Jurassic” Film Is ComingOtherwise, studios have kept clear of Jurassic, and with good reason. But now, a new dinosaur movie is ready to take on the blockbuster franchise: The End of Oak Street (2026).Previously titled Flowervale Street, the upcoming film is directed by David Robert Mitchell (It Follows) and produced by J.J. Abrams and stars Anne Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada) and Ewan McGregor (Doctor Sleep), whose family is seemingly transported back to the prehistoric era, along with their entire neighborhood (just as the title suggests).Warner Bros. recently unveiled the first official trailer for the film:The trailer keeps its prehistoric stars close to the chest, but we get a fleeting glimpse of a large, unidentified theropod dinosaur, which can be seen chasing Hathaway, McGregor, and their kids outside their home. While time travel is hardly original like genetically engineered dinosaurs in a safari park, it’s refreshing to be taking a much-needed break from Jurassic.Credit: Bad Robot / Warner Bros. What Is The End of Oak Street?“After a mysterious cosmic event rips Oak Street from suburbia and transports their neighborhood to someplace unknown, the Platt family soon discovers that their very survival depends on them sticking together as they navigate their now unrecognizable surroundings,” the official synopsis from Warner Bros. reads. The End of Oak Street is produced by JJ Abrams’ company Bad Robot, which has given us some monstrous flicks over the years, including Super 8 (2011), Cloverfield (2008), and 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016).Whether the new film will be as big or as successful as Jurassic Park (1993) or any of its sequels remains to be seen. Either way, the studio and the filmmakers are undoubtedly trying to capitalize on the success of the long-running blockbuster series. Who wouldn’t?The End of Oak Street will be released on August 14, 2026.Are you excited about The End of Oak Street? Are you glad we’re getting dinosaur movies that aren’t related to Jurassic Park?
