Aaron Rodgers deadline emerges with NFL future on the line as Pittsburgh Steelers wait goes on

Wait 5 sec.

Aaron Rodgers is notorious for doing things in his own time. The Pittsburgh Steelers are still waiting to hear the 42-year-old’s decision over whether he will return to the team or decide to call time on his NFL career entirely and retire.Rodgers is still taking his time making a decisionGettyBut Steelers owner Art Rooney II has revealed that he is expecting to be told of Rodgers’ decision before the 2026 NFL Draft begins on April 23. “I still expect that,” Rooney told Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Sunday. “I expect we’ll get an answer before the draft.“When I talked to him and Omar [Khan, Steelers general manager] talked to him, he told us he wasn’t going to take as long this year as he did last year [to make a decision]. “I’m not 100% sure what that means, but I expect something before the draft.”According to reports, the four-time NFL MVP would look to sign elsewhere, should he opt to return for a 22nd NFL season. In the 2025 season, Rodgers completed 65.7 percent of his passes for 3,322 yards with 24 touchdowns to just seven interceptions. In doing so, he helped the Black and Gold go 10-7 to clinch their first AFC North title since 2020. But they suffered an ugly 30-6 postseason defeat to the Houston Texans in the Wild Card Round, with Rodgers going 17-of-33 for 146 yards and an interception as he was sacked four times. This ultimately signalled the end of Mike Tomlin as head coach after he opted to walk away from the job he had held for almost two decades, with all signs pointing to him making the transition to a career in sports broadcasting. With Pittsburgh looking for only their fourth head coach in their franchise history, the team onboarded veteran Mike McCarthy – albeit an unpopular selection among the Steel City faithful. Should the pair reunite for 2026, McCarthy believes this would be a “great story”, while he also noted that Rodgers is currently “in a really good place,” though couldn’t shed anymore information over the quarterback’s decision. Steelers offense will look a little differentIf Rodgers does decide to return for one last ride with Pittsburgh, he would have more offensive weapons alongside DK Metcalf after the team swung a trade for wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. at the start of the new league year. There are also reports that the Steelers could even try and look to bring free agent receiver Stefon Diggs to the team. But if Rodgers does decide to walk away from the game of football good, then the Steelers will likely look to see what they can do in the upcoming draft. Although they do have a young talent in Will Howard on the roster, who has drawn high praise from ex-Steelers QB Charlie Batch, and is reportedly very beloved by McCarthy. They also have veteran Mason Rudolph under contract. At least the Steelers won’t have to wait for Rodgers to exit a darkness retreat where he gained clarity on his future back in 2023.Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our dedicated talkSPORT USA Facebook page and subscribe to our talkSPORT USA YouTube channel for all the news, exclusives, interviews and more.
