Tens of thousands of residents and several key industrial hubs in the Greater Accra and Tema regions will face scheduled power interruptions today, Sunday, 29th March 2026, as the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) undertakes critical infrastructure upgrades. The coordinated maintenance exercises come at a sensitive time for the power distributor, which is simultaneously battling to restore supply to several communities in the Ashanti West Region following a major equipment failure on Friday.Tema Region: Seven-hour blackoutTechnicians in the Tema Region are scheduled to begin work at 9:00 am, with the exercise expected to last until 4:00 pm. The seven-hour window will impact a broad corridor, including Suncity, Manya Jopanya, Shai Hills, and Wildlife, along with surrounding residential enclaves. The ECG has noted that these works are “essential” for long-term service reliability, particularly in areas experiencing rapid residential expansion.Accra East: Industrial and residential impactIn the Accra East Region, a separate five-hour maintenance window has been carved out from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. This exercise is expected to have a significant impact on one of the capital’s most commercially vibrant stretches.Affected areas include:Spintex Road: Impacting several major industries and warehouses.Teshie & Nungua: Including the Teshie Township, Agblezaa, and GREDA Estate.Manet & Baatsona: Affecting high-density gated communities and retail hubs.According to advisories issued by ECG, these works are aimed at “enhancing service reliability and strengthening the stability of the national grid.”Ashanti West: Emergency repairs at AhiakasoWhile the Sunday works are planned, engineers in the Ashanti West Region remain on high alert following an unplanned outage that struck on Friday, 27th March.A statement from the ECG confirmed that a fallen conductor at Ahiakaso caused a total loss of power to a cluster of towns, including Kodie, Ahenkro, Denase, Akom, Apagya, Aduman, Aduamoah, and Nkwantakese. While the company has not provided a definitive “Lights On” time for all affected Ashanti West customers, it confirmed that “engineers were immediately deployed to the site to rectify the fault and restore supply.”ECG’s Plea for PatienceThe power distributor has issued an apology to its customer base, acknowledging the frustration caused by the convergence of scheduled maintenance and accidental faults. The company maintains that the temporary discomfort is a necessary trade-off for a more robust network. In its public notices, the ECG reassured the public that its teams are “working diligently to resolve network issues” and emphasised that the Sunday exercises are vital to “ensure the long-term robustness of the power network across the regions.”Residents in the affected areas are advised to treat all electrical installations as “live” during the maintenance period, as power may be restored earlier than the scheduled completion times.
