The How to Train Your Dragon area of Epic Universe nearly looked extremely different.Since officially opening in May, Epic Universe has quickly become a must-visit for theme park fans in the U.S. The park is anchored by Celestial Park, a lush central hub featuring cascading fountains, botanical walkways, and the iconic Stardust Racers. From this space, guests pass through large themed portals into additional fully realized portals: SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic, Dark Universe, and How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk.Credit: Universal Orlando ResortAs the largest of the four IP-based lands in the park, How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk is designed as a living Viking village set between the second and third films. Guests can soar on Hiccup’s Wing Gliders, spin on Dragon Racer’s Rally, or compete on the interactive Fyre Drill boat ride. Meanwhile, The Untrainable Dragon show (also found at Universal Studios Beijing) sees Hiccup and Toothless soar above the audience in a production that many have described as the park’s emotional highlight.Mead Hall anchors the land’s dining, serving hearty meals and the signature “Yaknog” drink of malted chocolate, cinnamon, and whipped cream. Quick-service spots like Spit Fyre Grill and Hooligan’s Grog & Gruel keep the area lively, while the Viking Training Camp play zone ensures younger visitors have room to explore.Dotted throughout the land are animatronic dragons, some of which even breathe fire.Credit: UniversalHowever, we nearly had even more dragons in Isle of Berk. Before Universal officially opened Epic Universe to the public, Orlando locals regularly spotted dragon drones soaring above the theme park.Dragon drone sighting over Epic Universe tonight!Dragon drone sighting over Epic Universe tonight! pic.twitter.com/rI33BFoCss— Adventuring with Annie (@AnniesUniUpdate) April 16, 2025Similar to how Disney once flew a dragon over New Fantasyland on its opening night (then never took to the skies again), the dragons were an impressive sight. But as anyone who’s ever visited Epic Universe will tell you, these dragons have not actually manifested above the theme park – and an upcoming documentary series has confirmed that executives made the decision to axe the drones after deciding they just weren’t ready. The upcoming docuseries “Epic Ride: The Story of Universal Theme Parks” features lots of footage of the dragon drone testing for How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, including the moment Universal decided it wasn’t ready for the park. The upcoming docuseries "Epic Ride: The Story of Universal Theme Parks" features lots of footage of the dragon drone testing for How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, including the moment Universal decided it wasn't ready for the park. Our review of the docuseries, debuting… pic.twitter.com/D4Q4ao0cRV— Attractions Magazine (@Attractions) November 6, 2025Back in May, it was reported that Universal Creative was still finetuning the drones.“That’s been a long time coming and it’s right at the threshold of being able to release,” Universal’s Ryan Paul told The Orange County Register. “Once we have that integrated and actually running as the show that we want it to, it’ll really add to the skyline.”This followed an incident in late 2024 in which drones collided and fell into the crowd during a downtown Orlando holiday show, hitting a 7-year-old boy in the stomach. The boy later underwent emergency surgery after the drone allegedly shocked his heart. A lawsuit was later filed, claiming that the boy suffered “significant permanent injuries including past and future medical expenses, pain and suffering, disability, inconvenience, disfigurement, mental anguish, all other economic and non-economic damages.”Of course, months later, these drones have yet to manifest. While Epic Ride: The Story of Universal Theme Parks will shed more light on the situation, it doesn’t look particularly promising that these dragons will take to the skies above Epic Universe – at least not any time soon.Would you like to see dragons above Epic Universe? The post Universal Orlando Axes Dragons From Epic Universe appeared first on Inside the Magic.
