The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Vijayawada branch, officials raided Karimulla Jewellers on Peddapudi Street in Guntur on Thursday and seized 1,286.28 grams of gold ornaments being sold without the valid hallmarking.A laser-marking machine being used in violation of the mandatory hallmarking provisions under the BIS Act, 2016, was seized, said BIS Director Prem Sajani Patnala.“A case will be registered under Section 29 of the BIS Act, 2016, which stipulates imprisonment up to one year, besides a fine not less than ₹1 lakh. The fine may extend up to five times of the value of the goods seized,” the Director said in a release.THE BIS appealed to the consumers to look for the BIS logo, hallmarking and purity of jewellery before making a purchase.
