Gangster ‘assaults’ inspector to evade arrest, gets shot in leg

By: Express News ServiceSurat | November 7, 2025 04:38 AM IST 4 min readThe latest offence was a murder registered with the Bhestan Police Station in Surat city.Surat Crime Branch officers on Thursday shot at the right leg of gangster Salman Mirza alias Salman Lassi, who attempted to assault an inspector while evading his arrest.Mirza has a crime history of a decade with 16 cases of murder, attempt to murder, extortion, to name a few, and was evading his arrest in a case involving the murder of a youth at Unn on October 24.Acting on a tip-off, different teams of the city’s Crime Branch reached Ashiyana Street in Dabhel village, Navsari. The cops cordoned a suspicious house and alerted the neighbouring houses to remain silent. They learnt that the accused was in the backroom while his wife and children were in the first room of the house. Police sources said the accused had hid himself in the backroom after learning about the police’s arrival.A police officer in the team said, “We identified six suspected houses with the possibility of the presence of Salman. We checked the first house but did not find him, later our team knocked on the second house door. His wife opened the door. When questioned about Salman, she denied. Meanwhile, Salman, who was in the backroom, tried to flee through the back door. A police team was already positioned on the back door. The cops told him to surrender, but he refused and took out a knife and tried to assault a police inspector, PK Sodha. In self defence, Sodha fired from his pistol at his right leg and injured him. The cops overpowered and caught him.”Salman was immediately taken to New Civil Hospital, where the doctors carried out primary treatment. Surat Crime Branch Deputy Commissioner of police BP Roziya said, “After reaching the spot, we alerted the local Navsari police about our presence and told them to assist us. Salman tried to attack our raiding team, and in self-defence, our officer fired one round on Salman’s right leg below the knee. The bullet hit the leg portion and hit the nearby wall. Presently, his condition is reported to be stable.”Roziya added, “There were four police inspectors with 25 men in the operation. There were five members, including two minor children, in the house.  The house inmates include his wife, his brother-in-law, his parents and his children. We believe that for the last month, he was taken to a rented house in Dabhel and was staying with his wife and family.” Police sources said Salman has a vast criminal career spanning a decade. In the last eight years, 16 criminal offences have been registered against him with the Limbayat, Dindoli, and Bhestan police stations in Surat. He was also charged with the Gujarat Control of Terrorism and Organised Crime Act (GUJCTOC) around a year ago and was released on bail.The latest offence was a murder registered with the Bhestan Police Station in Surat city.Story continues below this adSurat Deputy Commissioner of police Rajesh Parmar said, “On October 24, Salman Lassi, accompanied by three henchmen, attacked two youths, including a juvenile, near a tea stall at Unn. Salman attacked them with a knife, over some old enmity and killed a youth identified as Shakeel Shaikh on the spot, while a juvenile was injured at that time. We have arrested three accused in the murder case, while Salman Lassi was absconding.
