The Kansas City Chiefs have reached the last three Super Bowls and won two of them for a very good reason.Yes, they have Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Chris Jones, but their success also comes from general manager Brett Veach and head coach Andy Reid, who have built, drafted and constructed a roster that is championship-caliber. They draft and develop talent as well as any team in the league, and because of that, they compete for Super Bowls year after year, even with enormous contracts to their stars. It can be a double-edged sword, with recent draft picks cornerback Trent McDuffie and wide receiver Rashee Rice now set for massive contracts.McDuffie was selected 21st overall in 2022, while Rice went 53rd overall in 2023. Both are poised for massive paydays next offseason. The two-time All-Pro McDuffie is reportedly expected to seek a contract extension that would surpass the four-year, $120.4 million deal Sauce Gardner signed in July, which included a record $85.653 million guaranteed. When you consider that Rice could command something similar to Terry McLaurin’s three-year, $96 million extension, that adds up to nearly $220 million for the two young stars the Chiefs drafted, developed, and hope to retain. And it would be worth it.It can be argued that McDuffie is now the most important piece of Kansas City’s defense, surpassing the aging Jones. And Rice’s impact on the offense is undeniable.Rice’s impact on Mahomes and the offense is clear: since returning from a six-game suspension, he has led the Chiefs with 233 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns over the past three games. The Chiefs had just about $5 million in cap space if they had pursued a trade at the deadline, with many speculating that Jets running back Breece Hall could have been a target for Veach. The savvy GM can now roll that $5 million over to the offseason to help sign the team’s young stars. Of course, countless moves remain between now and then, and much will depend on how they manage the big contracts of their star players.Rice is the Chiefs’ top wide receiverGettyMcDuffie is one of the league’s best cornersGettyFor example, it’s unclear whether this will be Kelce’s final season. His salary could come off the books if he decides to retire in February. However, judging by his comments on this week’s New Heights podcast, the 36-year-old looks ready to re-energize himself during the bye week and come back ready to hit the ground running.“I feel good about it because I know the characters that we have in the [locker] room,” Kelce said. “We’re going to come back recharged and ready to rock and roll. I can’t say that I’m not frustrated, more from the entire start of the season than just this Bills game.“There’s games I don’t think we had any business losing. I feel like we didn’t come out with our best punch against Buffalo. We’ve got to find a way to clean all of that up, man.“We’ve got to get back to playing passionate Chiefs football, dying for each other out there on the field, man.”Doesn’t exactly sound like a man on the verge of retirement.Rice’s return has taken Kansas City’s offense to another levelGettyNFL's Greatest......Ranking the top 10......Quarterbacks of all-time – Can anyone better Tom Brady?Wide receivers of all-time – Does Randy Moss or Jerry Rice come out on top?Running backs of all-time – Stacking Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith and moreTight ends of all-time – How does Travis Kelce compare? The Chiefs are currently 5-4, and if the playoffs started today, they would be on the outside looking in.Forget missing the playoffs—Mahomes has never failed to win his division in any year of his career. There is still plenty of football left to be played before the postseason, and a lot can happen. The Chiefs didn’t make any moves at the trade deadline because they are confident in the players they already have. And, as always, they keep one eye on the future, watching who will need to be re-signed to big-money deals.Next up: McDuffie and Rice.Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our dedicated talkSPORT USA Facebook page and subscribe to our talkSPORT USA YouTube channel for all the news, exclusives, interviews and more
