Federico Chiesa gives Florian Wirtz highest praise: “One of the best I’ve ever seen”

Federico Chiesa believes Florian Wirtz is one of the best players he’s ever seen with the ball at his feet, giving his new Liverpool teammate the highest praise he could.Chiesa and Wirtz have already shared the pitch on six occasions this season, but the Italian will know better than most from his experiences in training. And while the £116 million signing is still getting up to speed after his switch from Bayer Leverkusen he has already convinced those who watch him day in, day out.“One of the best players I’ve ever seen on the ball,” Chiesa enthused in an interview with Sky Sports. “The way he controls the ball, the way he touches the ball, it’s just world class.“Of course he has everything to be a success at Liverpool, there’s nothing holding him back.“He came from another league. Hugo instead adapted quickly; [Florian] needs some time, that is normal. But the player is just amazing, from what I’ve seen.“The price tag, of course, 10 years ago maybe he would have come here for maybe £50 million, £60 million – with inflation now it’s £100 million.“But if we go back in time it would still have cost us a lot of money, because the player is just fantastic.”That serves as the highest praise possible from a player of Chiesa’s knowledge, particularly given those he has played alongside in the past with both Italy and Juventus. It is not only Wirtz’s quality on the ball that makes him a crucial player for Liverpool moving forward, however, and speaking to Arne Slot in an interview for TNT Sports, former Man City midfielder Owen Hargreaves summed up his all-round ability.“He’s maybe getting some criticism, people think [working] against the ball is not one of his strengths,” he explained.“But actually he’s probably one of the best players in Europe [off the ball]. “Possession won in the final third [last season], in the Bundesliga [he’s second], in Europe’s top five leagues he’s seventh and in the Champions League he was third.“It’s not the fact he can’t do it: he’s actually one of the best players at doing it. It’s probably just about finding his feet in this Liverpool starting XI.”Slot agreed: “He runs a lot, this is what we see as well in our data, and if you run a lot you are able to win a lot of balls back.”
