Energy Minister Miriam Dalli has revealed that Malta is moving ahead with plans for a third interconnector with Sicily, adding another major energy link between the islands. The new IC3 would join Malta’s already operational first interconnector, as well as the second one currently under construction.According to Dalli, this third connection would operate on a different point of connection and voltage level from the other two, meaning it would provide a more diversified and resilient source of electricity transmission for Malta.Tenders for the project are expected to be issued in the coming weeks. The minister also said the Government will continue offering incentives to help households invest in renewable technologies, including schemes allowing families without roof space to benefit from solar panels. Officials said the wider energy strategy is aligned with Malta’s Vision 2050 goals and broader European climate targets, while aiming to keep energy prices stable and protect both families and businesses during the transition.Meanwhile, Dalli also revealed that the possibility of an interconnector between Malta and Africa is being explored. She noted that countries in North Africa have significant solar and wind energy potential, which could make them an important future energy partner. If realised, it could mark one of Malta’s most ambitious energy projects yet. What do you think of this?•
