First Electronic Tagging Order Issued In Malta

Two individuals are set to be placed under electronic tagging in what is believed to be a first for Malta.According to Times of Malta, Judge Consuelo Scerri Herrera ordered the measure as part of bail conditions for Nicky Falzon and Daniela Spiteri, who are appealing a theft conviction.The pair were previously found guilty of stealing a woman’s bag from a beach and breaking into her car at Ta’ Xbiex Marina. Magistrate Marseann Farrugia sentenced Falzon, 27, to two years in prison and Spiteri, 43, to three years.Bail was granted pending appeal, subject to conditions including a curfew, daily police signing, and a ban on approaching the victim. They must also pay a €1,000 deposit and a €5,000 personal guarantee.The court ordered Local Enforcement System Agency (LESA) to monitor them via electronic tagging under the Electronic Monitoring Act.Do you think electronic tagging is effective?•
