LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Who's been making the best impression during training hours heading into the 152nd Kentucky Derby? Our boots on the ground and Senior Racing Editor Steve Sherack reveals his top five favorite workouts recorded from the field of 20 beneath the Twin Spires.1) CHIEF WALLABEEApril 20, 2026 | 5F | 1:00.00 (2/11)This is the move that everyone is still talking about.Sporting blinkers for the second straight breeze (he'll wear them for the first time in the Derby), 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard' Chief Wallabee (Constitution) worked five furlongs in 1:00 in company with fellow 'Rising Star' Gilded Bandit (Charlatan), a promising maiden winner with a 93 Beyer Speed Figure at Keeneland this spring.Chief Wallabee traveled kindly heading into the far turn and set his sights on his workmate approaching the quarter pole. Under a snug hold by Junior Alvarado while traveling beautifully down the stretch, Chief Wallabee began to assert himself approaching the wire and continued on in style, galloping out with authority.Chief Wallabee worked in fractions of :24.80, :36.60 and :48.20 and galloped out six furlongs in 1:12 and seven-eighths in 1:26.60, according to Churchill Downs clocker John Nichols.“I thought it was very good, he finished really well and galloped out strong,” Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott said. “He's an inexperienced horse and we put the blinkers on to give him a little something to help him focus.”Alvarado added, “It was a good work. He had a strong gallop out and did everything we wanted to.”Chief Wallabee's final Kentucky Derby workout–a four-furlong breeze in :49.20 Apr. 26–could've easily topped this list as well.2) COMMANDMENTApril 25, 2026 | 5F | 1:01.40 (32/41)Commandment (Into Mischief) still may be galloping out following this breeze. For a horse not known for wowing in the morning, this maintenance workout with a monster gallop out left a lasting impression.Working with Edvin Vargas up and on the outside of the 4-year-old maiden Rock Music (Into Mischief), Commandment stopped the clock for five furlongs in 1:01.40. He was credited with galloping out six furlongs in 1:14.40 and kept on rolling all the way down the backstretch.“He's a unique horse and doesn't do a whole lot in his training, but his move today was exactly what we wanted a week out from the Derby,” trainer Brad Cox said. “You could tell in his gallop out once he got by his workmate, his ears went up like he knew he was finished with the work.”Commandment's Cox-trained stablemates 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard' Further Ado (Gun Runner) and Fulleffort (Liam's Map) have been receiving plenty of attention–and rightfully so–for their morning preparations as well.3) INCREDIBOLTApril 26, 2026 | 4F | :47 (2/71)You just have to appreciate the way Incredibolt (Bolt d'Oro)–two for two at Churchill Downs–gets over this surface.Working four furlongs outside of the unraced Wan Dale (Tiz the Law), Incredibolt skipped over the ground effortlessly with jockey Jaime Torres up while stopping the timer in a sharp :47. He galloped out five-eighths in :59 and three-quarters in 1:13.80.“Incredibolt is like a race car, he has a lot of gears,” trainer Riley Mott said.Torres added, “From the first time I breezed him, I said that was my Derby horse. His work was very good and all you would want to see.”4) EMERGING MARKETApril 24, 2026 | 4F | :47.60 (15/92)Unbeaten 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard' Emerging Market (Candy Ride {Arg}) was absolutely cruising down the stretch beneath jockey Flavien Prat during this four-furlong spin in :47.60. He was credited with early splits of :12 and :24 and galloped out five furlongs in 1:00.20. The long-striding chestnut was breezing in company with the maiden of two starts Hedge Book (Practical Joke).“He just glided through the lane,” trainer Chad Brown said. “He galloped way out past three-quarters the right way and came back good. I was very pleased with the way he was moving. He hit his fractions perfect, and he didn't even look like he was going that fast, which is what you love to see as a trainer.”5) LITMUS TESTApril 23, 2026 | 5F (gate) | :59 (2/10)After posting a pair of very disappointing efforts for Hall of Famer Bob Baffert at Oaklawn this spring, Litmus Test (Nyquist) earned his way into the field with this flashy five-furlong move from the gate in :59.With jockey Martin Garcia in the irons, he was reaching out beautifully down the stretch and left workmate Favoritism (Enticed) in the dust with an eye-catching gallop out around the clubhouse turn.Litmus Test was clocked in fractions of :23.80, :35.40 and :47.20. He galloped out six furlongs in 1:11.20 and seven-eighths in 1:24.“He was going to work Sunday (at Oaklawn Park), but the weather was bad and the track was sealed so we gave him a couple days to gallop here and he was good to go,” said assistant Dan Ward, who is overseeing Baffert's string at Churchill Downs. The post Top Five Kentucky Derby Workouts: Chief Wallabee Standing Out During Training Hours appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
