Jerry Bailey has won the GI Kentucky Derby twice and has provided expert analysis on the NBC broadcast of the race for years. So who better to join the TDN Writers' Room podcast team for its annual Derby handicapping show than the Hall of Fame jockey? The podcast is presented by Keeneland and Bailey was the Gainesway Guest of the Week.Much of the talk after the draw centered around morning-line favorite Renegade (Into Mischief) getting the one hole. Bailey doesn't think that will be a problem.“I know the opinion, that the one hole is terrible,” Bailey said. “If he had drawn 16 or 17 or 18, where would Irad Ortiz want to be by the time he goes by the wire the first time? Closer to the rail so he doesn't get hung out on the first turn. He's starting from there. To me, Flavien Prat and Irad Ortiz are the best in-race decision makers that we have in the game today. He's going to figure this out. He's going to put him somewhere in the middle to back and he'll be one or two wide in the first turn, and then the race will dictate what he can do after that. It is not a negative that he drew number one.”Can Further Ado (Gun Runner) duplicate his brilliant form from Keeneland or does he run his best only at that track? Bailey doesn't think that is an issue, either.“There are some horses that like some courses better than others, but typically it's something like going to Saratoga from downstate New York,” he said. “It's the mountain air. It's better. There's less traffic around the horses and it's a quieter training atmosphere. Those are the kind of things I think horses enjoy and it causes them to thrive at a different racetrack. But going from Lexington to Louisville? I don't think there's that big of a difference. It's too shallow of a body of work to judge from. He had just one race last year in the fall at Keeneland before coming to Churchill Downs and winning the Kentucky Jockey Club. That performance wasn't as good as his maiden win at Keeneland, but there might have been other factors involved.”When asked what horse he would ride in the race if he had his choice, Bailey's answer was Further Ado.He's also high on The Puma (Essential Quality).“I have (The Puma) as one of my horses that could definitely win the race,” Bailey said. “But every horse in this race has a knock or a check mark. I talked to Javier Castellano after his ride on The Puma in the Tampa Bay Derby. He intentionally wanted to stay on the outside. Now, he said that was because he thought it was the better part of the racetrack. But he did the same thing in the Florida Derby. I'm wondering, does this horse need to be on the outside of horses to get his best performance? It kind of is a question mark in my mind. I do believe Javier will ride him slightly differently in the Kentucky Derby than he did in the Florida Derby.”The “Fastest Horse of the Week” was Mashallah (Maxfield), who earned a 106 Beyer figure in a brilliant maiden win at Keeneland. The Fastest Horse of the Week segment is sponsored by WinStar, which stands the sire Cogburn.Elsewhere on the podcast, which is also sponsored by the PHBA, 1/ST TV, and West Point Thoroughbreds, Randy Moss, Bill Finley, and Zoe Cadman took a deep dive into the Derby field, going over all 20 horses entered in the body of the race. Finley picked The Puma. Cadman selected Potente (Into Mischief) and Moss said his pick will come down to either Further Ado or Chief Wallabee (Constitution).Click here to watch the Writers' Room podcast and click here to listen to the program. The post Jerry Bailey Joins The TDN Writers’ Room Podcast Derby Preview Edition appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
