Few films have left a mark quite like Jurassic Park (1993). More than three decades on, it’s still those nail-biting sequences — not just the dinosaurs — that people tend to remember. The trembling water in the cup, the Tyrannosaurus rex breaking out of the paddock in the middle of a thunderstorm, the subsequent jeep attack, and, of course, that kitchen sequence, where Lex (Ariana Richards) and Tim Murphy (Joe Mazzello) desperately try to stay hidden while two highly intelligent raptors search for them up and down the dark aisles. Those scenes shaped how audiences think about tension in blockbuster cinema, and now, a new Jurassic Park experience is aiming to put players directly inside them.Credit: Universal PicturesA New Kind of Jurassic Park ExperienceJurassic Park: Survival (TBA) is an upcoming first-person action-adventure video game set just 24 hours after the events of the 1993 film. And, according to the developers, Saber Interactive, it’s designed to recreate the feeling of being on Isla Nublar and experiencing those iconic moments for yourselves. While the original cinematic trailer that premiered at the Game Awards in December 2023 teased this, it was confirmed in an official behind-the-scenes featurette released by Saber last summer, where Creative Director Oliver Hollis-Leick explains exactly how closely the team is drawing from the original film in terms of its sequences.Credit: Universal City Studios LLC and Amblin Entertainment / Saber Interactive“When we were deciding how to introduce the raptors, one thing that jumped out to us was, what if we could make the player experience what Lex and Tim did in the kitchen?” he says. “That and other sequences like it are meant to put you in the shoes of those movie characters to experience the terror for yourself.”“It’s really exciting to be able to translate this incredible film into a video game because you really have the opportunity to go much deeper into the film,” Jurassic World Project Executive Lisa St Amand adds. “We worked really closely with our partners and with Amblin and our filmmakers to make sure that we’re capturing the island and all the dinosaurs in really great detail.”Related: Next ‘Jurassic Park’ Game Will Likely Be Franchise’s First Open-World Experience, New Details SuggestSeveral Iconic Jurassic Moments Are Being RecreatedIt’s not just the kitchen sequence, either — the behind-the-scenes video also hints at a vehicle-based sequence, one of the Jurassic Park franchise’s signature dino experiences.Footage in the cinematic trailer also hints at multiple callbacks to the 1993 classic — including a Dilophosaurus encounter in the jungle that echoes Dennis Nedry’s grisly fate, and a Gallimimus chase that calls back to the film’s iconic stampede where Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Lex, and Tim must outrun a herd that’s “flocking their way” while trying to make it across the island.Players will get to explore iconic locations like the Visitor Center and the park gates; however, with “a fully realized Isla Nublar” on offer (per the official website), they’ll also be able to discover never-before-seen areas, such as a resort hotel and underground bunkers.“There’s lots of facilities, there’s lots of buildings, there’s lots of attractions that are under construction, there’s a hotel under construction,” Universal Products & Experiences executive producer John Melchior says in the featurette. “So fans are going to see things they only wish they saw.”Credit: Universal City Studios LLC and Amblin Entertainment / Saber InteractiveRelated: New ‘Jurassic’ Theme Park Experience Has Recreated Entire 1993 Film in Meticulous DetailThe game follows Dr. Maya Joshi (voiced and performed in motion capture by Payal Mistry), a new character navigating the aftermath of the original film’s events.
