On any given morning, long before the city fully wakes, Daisy Kabonesa is already at work. By 6 am, she has quietly stepped into the office with purpose. Her day does not begin with tasks, but with a prayer, a moment of gratitude and guidance that has shaped two decades of service at ICEA LION. Kabonesa is, in many ways, the heartbeat of the workplace the first smile many encounter; the steady hand behind seamless mornings, and the quiet force that ensures each day begins just right. Back in 2006, what began as casual visits to pick up a friend turned into something deeper; a sense of belonging she could not ignore. One day, she spoke what seemed like a joke but was rooted in conviction: “I think I can work here. Why don’t you give me a job?” That bold moment turned into an interview and an answered prayer. “I left the interview already thanking God for the job,” she recalls. “I believed this is where I belonged.” That belief has never wavered. From her earliest days on probation to becoming a confirmed staff member in 2007, Kabonesa embraced her role with determination. She was told she had to prove herself and she did, not through grand gestures, but through consistency, care, and commitment. Her responsibilities may seem simple on paper: organizing breakfast, setting up meeting rooms, providing tea, ensuring everything runs smoothly. But in practice, her work is the invisible thread that holds daily operations together. Whether it is a regular morning or high-level board meeting, Kabonesa ensures that everything is perfect before the first person walks through the door. “I love what I do,” she says. “And when you love your job, you give it your whole heart.” When Kabonesa joined the company, it had just over 40 employees. She was the 43rd. Today, she has watched it grow into a far larger and stronger organization. Over the years, she has seen leadership transitions, organizational changes, and expansion but one thing has remained constant: a culture of support. That sense of belonging has been central to her journey; a quiet but powerful motivation that has kept her grounded and committed. For Kabonesa, the true impact of her work is not measured in tasks completed, but in lives touched. She is often the first-person new employees meet, sometimes nervous, uncertain, and stepping into a new chapter. With a kind word or a reassuring smile, she helps ease those first-day anxieties. Many return later to thank her, remembering how she made them feel welcome. “That makes me proud,” she says. “It means I made a difference.” It is in these small, human moments that Kabonesa’s legacy quietly unfolds. Beyond the workplace, Kabonesa’s job has transformed her life in profound ways. As a single mother of three – her partner passed away – she has faced her share of challenges, including the loss of her parents in recent years. Yet, she has always carried herself with strength and grace. Through her work, she has been able to educate her daughter Marion Tushabe, who graduated with a Degree in Records and Management from Makerere University. She has acquired land and built a home, milestones she attributes directly to the opportunities she received. “This job has given me so much,” she reflects. “That is why I am truly grateful.” Kabonesa’s outlook on work is deeply rooted in faith. As a born-again Christian, she believes in serving with gratitude and excellence, regardless of the role. “I always tell young people, ‘When you pray for a job and get one, give it your best’,” she says. “Even if it seems small, be faithful. Greater things will come.” Her philosophy is simple but powerful: purpose is not found in position, but in attitude. As she looks toward the future, Kabonesa is not seeking another job or a new corporate role. Instead, she dreams of starting a small business after retirement; a new chapter built on the foundation of everything she has learned. “This company has given me enough,” she says. “It has prepared me for what comes next.” If there is one thing Kabonesa hopes people will remember, it is not her years of service or the tasks she performed, but something far more personal. “My kindness,” she says softly. “That I made people feel welcome, respected, and cared for.” In a world that often celebrates big achievements and loud successes, Kabonesa’s story is a reminder of something quieter, and perhaps more powerful; That, greatness can live in consistency! That, impact can come from kindness. And that, a simple prayer, spoken in faith, Kabonesa’s legacy is already woven into the insurance company’s story; not in headlines or boardrooms, but in the hearts of the people she has welcomed, served a cup of tea, supported, and inspired every single day. eupal.ff@gmail.comThe post Daisy Kabonesa’s journey of faith and humble beginnings appeared first on The Observer.
