The problem is that having children before one is ready and able to care for them perpetuates the cycle of poverty. If the moms (who are often very young) would work and get stable, and ideally find a stable partner, they would have a chance at rising out of poverty. If they already have a child, sure it’s tough but not nearly as tough as having multiple kids. I don’t think promoting birth control or even abstinence is a stance against poor people. Rather, it’s trying to help them create a better future for themselves and their current or future children.
