Action-Packed Long Weekend Gets Underway

Wait 5 sec.

It's a case of be ready for anything over the next three days, with Friday seeing the beginning of Newmarket's three-day Guineas meeting, Ascot's card of Royal meeting pointers, the traditional May Day fixture at Saint-Cloud and the first part of an intriguing two-day meeting at Goodwood. Saturday's 2,000 Guineas and Sunday's 1,000 Guineas are at the centre of a storm of activity which will require further analysis when calm is briefly restored next week.Once the draw had been made for Saturday's G1 Betfred 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket on Thursday morning, there was a significant market move for Ballydoyle's sole runner Gstaad (Starspangledbanner) and within minutes he had supplanted the long-time ante-post favourite Bow Echo (Night Of Thunder) in what could be the start of a major gamble. It has become the perceived wisdom over the past fortnight that the Dewhurst is the form to concentrate on and Gstaad is the poster boy for the October juvenile feature, having chased home the ill-fated Gewan. For a while it seemed that Puerto Rico would be the one for the stable here, but something has clearly shifted in the build-up and we are now once again dealing with a red-hot Ballydoyle runner in the season's first Classic.Supporters of Bow Echo, who covered this course and distance in a time to take note of in the Royal Lodge, will take comfort from the fact that Aidan O'Brien hasn't won this since 2019 and George Boughey's pride and joy seems one of those reliable class acts who satisfies a lot of the criteria for this.Charlie Appleby's leading hope appears to be the Dewhurst third Distant Storm (Night Of Thunder), another who is making his reappearance in 2026. So far this spring, it looks as if those who have had a sharpener hold an advantage over the seasonal debutantes, but Gstaad beat True Love on his two-year-old introduction and Bow Echo and Distant Storm also both won on their first starts.Of those who come into this with a run under their belt, the G3 Ballylinch Stud Red Rocks Stakes winner Thesecretadversary (St Mark's Basilica) is a fascinating contender on his first try at a straight mile, while Oxagon (Frankel) matched the 2,000 Guineas-winning time of Notable Speech in the G3 Craven Stakes and is not to be under-estimated. Oisin Murphy might try and get an easy time of it again on the front, with no obvious pacemakers in here but it is possible that Ryan Moore allows Gstaad to use his stride to make it a test while Bow Echo will surely be prominent to avoid any monkey business.Sunday's 1,000 Guineas hinges on the readiness of Precise, who if Gstaad completes his task 24 hours earlier could be in line to provide Starspangledbanner with an unlikely Guineas double. Aidan O'Brien has made no secret of where he expects the Moyglare and Fillies' Mile heroine to end up in the stable's pantheon of top-class fillies down the years. First she will have to master the Prix Morny heroine Venetian Sun (Starman) as she did at The Curragh, as well as her Cheveley Park Stakes-winning stablemate True Love (No Nay Never), who has already exceeded stamina expectations in the G3 Priory Belle. This renewal looks top-heavy, with Godolphin's My Highness (Ghaiyyath) making up a quartet of class acts it is hard to look beyond.Friday's action begins in earnest with some Derby prospects lining up for the Listed Newmarket Stakes, where Godolphin's Poseidon's Warrior (Sea The Stars) tackles Normandie Stud's My Love Is King (Kingman) shortly before the veteran stayer Sweet William (Sea The Stars) carries the latter's colours in Ascot's G3 Longines Sagaro Stakes.   Things heat up shortly afterwards, with the G3 Commonwealth Cup Trial Stakes playing host to the Middle Park one-two-three Wise Approach (Mehmas), Brussels (Wootton Bassett) and Coppull (Bated Breath) and the former carrying a penalty. In the following Listed Paradise Stakes over the Queen Anne trip, Juddmonte's Celebration Mile winner and Poule d'Essai des Poulains runner-up Jonquil (Lope De Vega) bids to get back on track in a field that includes the Gosdens' newly-gelded Bowmark (Kingman) who has long suggested he has something in the tank.Newmarket's G2 Jockey Club Stakes sees the return of the wide-margin Grosser Preis von Bayern winner Bay City Roller (New Bay), while Saint-Cloud's feature G2 Prix du Muguet looks between the Wertheimers' pair No Lunch (Dubawi) and Silius (Dubawi). Juddmonte's G3 Prix de Royaumont winner Sunly (Night Of Thunder) is back in a fascinating renewal of the G3 Prix Allez France, where Owen Burrows saddles the impressive Listed Prix Solitude winner Azaniya (Night Of Thunder).Friday also sees some live Deutsches Derby prospects tackle Munich's G3 Bavarian Classic, with Darius Racing and Michael Motschmann's exciting G3 Zukunfts-Rennen and G3 Preis des Winterfavoriten winner Gostam (Saxon Warrior) in pole position. Eckhard Sauren's Lommi (Churchill) was five-lengths second to Gostam in the Winterfavoriten, but with a subsequent G3 Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen win in the bag renews rivalry.Saturday's card at Goodwood features the Listed Conqueror Fillies' Stakes, where Juddmonte's Sun Chariot Stakes runner-up Blue Bolt (Blue Point) clashes with the long-absent demoted Poule d'Essai des Pouliches winner Shes Perfect (Sioux Nation). The post Action-Packed Long Weekend Gets Underway appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
