Chris Wilder praises ‘brave’ Sheffield United owners despite shock exit after play-off loss

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has praised the club’s owners, despite their decision to sack him last June.The Blades lost in last season’s Championship play-off final with Sunderland reaching the Premier League via Tom Watson’s injury time strike.GettyWilder did superbly in tough circumstances to return to Bramall Lane after five games[/caption]However, despite almost getting them back into the English top-flight, Wilder left by mutual consent just days later.He was replaced by Ruben Selles with a raft of new signings joining, including Japhet Tanganga from Millwall for £7.5million.The Portuguese boss, though, lasted just five games – all defeats.Wilder was swiftly reappointed but only managed three wins in his first nine games upon his return.The arrival of striker Patrick Bamford, who previously had a small run-in with Wilder, though, galvanised the Blades in November.As the Championship season came to an end, the Blades beat Derby, who were on the cusp of the play-offs, 2-1.Wilder led his men to a 13th place finish, 11 points off a play-off spot.Their rise up the division will give supporters belief that with wise investment they can challenge for promotion next year.And Wilder, rather than carry any bitterness about his exit 11 months ago, chooses to see the positives about his return to Bramall Lane.Asked if stability is needed for the club this summer, Wilder said: “When we walked out of Wembley, [we were] obviously really disappointed.Wilder did well to steady the ship before helping Sheffield United climb the Championship tableGetty“I don’t think anybody would have expected it but that’s the way the game is.“The owners made the decision and they were brave enough to ask me to come back.“They put the money where their mouth is and supported the club in terms of the players that came in so I don’t think there’s any criticism that should go towards them.“I really appreciate the faith that they put in me and the coaching staff to get it back to where it should be.“Still work to do and I’m incredibly determined and driven to deliver for them but most importantly to deliver for the supporters and the club.”
