Darley EBF Fillies' Maiden winner Earth Shot had been second to her stable-mate My Ophelia (Sea The Stars) on her sole start prior to Friday but she took a major step forward on livelier ground at Newmarket to keep the Oaks dream alive for owners Paul and Sally Flatt of Childwickbury Stud.Owner-breeders in their own right, the Flatts bought the daughter of Time Test from Anthony Oppenheimer, whose Classic-breeding credentials have long been proven, and now his Hascombe & Valiant Studs could again be represented at the highest level as breeder. Earth Shot was selected at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale by Jill Lamb and she looks well bought at 90,000gns. Out of the Group 3-winning Nathaniel mare Precious Ramotswe, Earth Shot's roots run six generations deep in the Hascombe & Valiant annals, with her sixth dam Lora (Lorenzaccio) being the dam of Sir Philip Oppenheimer's homebred 1,000 Guineas winner of 1982, On The House (Be My Guest). Lora is also the fourth dam of Anthony Oppenheimer's Derby and Arc winner Golden Horn (Cape Cross).“We were looking for something that would become a broodmare as well when we were buying,” said Sally Flatt, who was at Newmarket with her daughter Vivie to witness Earth Shot's smart victory.“She's from a fantastic family and when we went to buy her at the sales we were just so impressed with her as an individual. She's just beautiful and we could just see her becoming a broodmare for us as well at that stage. You obviously hope that they can do something on the track at the same time.”She added, “We were nervous because on her first run last year it was soft ground and she ate it up and she's got a high-knee action, so we were thinking that she wouldn't like too much hardness in the ground. But actually, today, she's just proved us wrong on that.”Flatt, who owns eight broodmares with her husband Paul and has four fillies in training, added of the prospect of going to Epsom next month, “There's nothing from today that would prevent that journey so far. So it's still the dream.”Earth Shot's trainer William Haggas added, “The owners sponsor the mile-and-a-quarter fillies' race on Lockinge day [the Childwickbury Stud Fillies' Trial Stakes] so I suspect we'll have a go there and see if she's worthy of a place on June 5.“She didn't look like she was stopping today and the dam's progeny have stayed very well. I've no doubt she'll get the trip but whether she's quite ready for a test like that we'll see.”Haggas was back in the winner's enclosure later with the classy Santorini Star, who, as a daughter of the aforementioned Golden Horn, also has an Oppenheimer link. The trainer admitted that he was kicking himself for not giving Santorini Star an entry for the £1 million Coolmore Coronation Cup but said that he would discuss with owners Tony Bloom and Ian McAleavy the possibility of supplementing the mare in a bid to gain that crucial Group 1 win. Santorini Star kicked off her season in style | Emma Berry As well as Friday's G2 Jockey Club Stakes, Santorini Star, a half-sister to Group 1 winner Dreamloper (Lope De Vega), won last year's G2 Park Hill Fillies' Stakes and was second in the G1 Prix de Royallieu.“I thought she'd got quicker, her work's been quicker, she's a genuine filly,” Haggas said. “She's shown she can win a Group 2 race over a mile and a half and she'll improve for that. She tries hard and that's worth a lot.”Santorini Star certainly has good genetic claims on Epsom, even if she is now two years past her Classic season. Her fifth dam Bireme (Grundy) won the Oaks for owner-breeder Dick Hollingsworth back in 1980 and more recently that same family was responsible for the 2013 Oaks winner Talent (New Approach), who is out of Bireme's daughter Yawl (Rainbow Quest).Dick Hollingsworth's nephew Mark Dixon bred and raced Talent with James Rowsell of Ashbrittle Stud, and Dixon is also the co-breeder, with Luke Lillingston of Mount Coote Stud, of Santorini Star's dam Livia's Dream (Teofilo).A superb day on the Rowley Mile for Haggas's Somerville Lodge Stable was completed when Saber Strike (Night Of Thunder) landed the Listed King Charles II Stakes in the colours of Victorious Forever.
