The search for a missing 5-year-old girl in Alice Springs, Australia, has reached a devastating conclusion after authorities discovered a body near the Old Timers Camp. According to People, the Northern Territory Police confirmed the discovery on April 30. While a formal autopsy is still pending to confirm the cause of death, authorities believe the remains belong to the young girl. At the request of her family, she is now being referred to as Kumanjayi Little Baby. The situation escalated quickly following the discovery of the body. Per The Guardian, an angry crowd later clashed with police outside an Alice Springs hospital where the primary suspect, 47-year-old Jefferson Lewis, was being treated after his arrest. The unrest resulted in objects being thrown at officers, police vehicles being set on fire, and authorities deploying tear gas to manage the scene. On April 26, the girl had been staying at the family home in Alice Springs when she vanished. Her mother had reportedly visited the town camp to use laundry facilities and had tucked her daughter into bed before 11:30 p.m. When the mother went to check on her later, the child was gone. During the initial search, police found doors and fly screens open at the residence, which initially led investigators to believe she might have wandered out on her own. In Australia’s outback, even wandering is terrifying thanks to the wildlife The focus of the investigation soon shifted toward Jefferson Lewis, a recently released prisoner with a history of domestic violence convictions. Acting Commander Mark Grieve previously stated that Lewis was staying at the family home at the time the child disappeared, despite not being closely related to them. As the search intensified, police discovered a yellow shirt worn by Lewis, along with a pair of child’s underwear on a riverbank near the Old Timers Camp. Northern Territory Assistant Police Commissioner Peter Malley noted that forensic testing on the underwear revealed two DNA profiles, one belonging to the girl and the other, likely to Lewis. And I say to Jefferson Lewis, we’re coming for you.” Following the discovery of the body, Commissioner Dole expressed the gravity of the situation.
