Madonna and Sabrina Carpenter are making a statement in their new song “Bring Your Love,” which addresses criticisms about their public personas and music careers. In the track, which the singers released officially last night and debuted onstage at Coachella, they both remind the world that their love of music is what drives them to create art, not the feedback they receive. They take aim at their haters in the first verse, with Madonna singing, “Don’t comment on my ideas / I don’t want your judgment or your expectations,” and Carpenter adding, “Don’t wind me up like a toy / Your vision of me is a killer of joy.”In the pre-chorus, Madonna tells listeners that she’ll continue to speak out (“I know where the bodies are buried / Don’t try to shut me up”) and Carpenter hints that she isn’t chasing charts or streams (“Don’t try to distract me with numbers / I did it all for love”).View full post on YouTubeBoth Madonna and Carpenter have been open in interviews about their relationship with criticism. In September, Madonna spoke on the podcast On Purpose With Jay Shetty about finding spirituality (in her case, Kabbalah, which she began studying in 1996). It changed her life—and helped her tune out the noise.“I will never go back to the nobody life I had when I was a child growing up,” she began. “So, I definitely was fueled by an inner drive, but I would not say that I was spiritual or conscious. When I was pregnant, I suddenly realized I knew nothing, and I was a slave or a victim of other people’s opinions of me, and I didn’t have really, even though it looked like, and looks like, I was confident, brave, audacious, whatever, I deep down inside, I was not.”She recalled how her spirituality “gave me courage to be who I am and who I’m meant to be, and made me actually think about intention and a real sense of purpose. Because my sense of purpose can’t just be, ‘I want to be rich and famous,’ or ‘I want to be popular,’ or ‘I want to sell a lot of records,’ because none of that lasts.”Carpenter, meanwhile, told Rolling Stone in August, “It’s always so funny to me when people complain. They’re like, ‘All she does is sing about this.’ But those are the songs that you’ve made popular. Clearly you love sex. You’re obsessed with it. It’s in my show. There’s so many more moments than the ‘Juno’ positions, but those are the ones you post every night and comment on. I can’t control that. If you come to the show, you’ll [also] hear the ballads; you’ll hear the more introspective numbers. I find irony and humor in all of that, because it seems to be a recurring theme. I’m not upset about it, other than I feel mad pressure to be funny sometimes.”She added in a second conversation with the outlet, “I don’t want to be pessimistic, but I truly feel like I’ve never lived in a time where women have been picked apart more, and scrutinized in every capacity. I’m not just talking about me. I’m talking about every female artist that is making art right now.”“Bring Your Love” is Carpenter and Madonna’s way of reclaiming the narrative—and sending a message to their detractors.
