one of my grandparents was 7th and another was 5th born. A third was third born but the first two babies passed away from childhood illness. There were no social programs to speak of, back then. You are talking about a time long past, probably a good century ago. Literally everything was different then - from family values and expectations, to finances, to children's life expectancy as you mentioned. It's an apples to oranges comparison.
