Construction walls have surrounded the attraction ever since, but Disney Park guests watched as a towering crane lowered brand-new steel tracks into the Frontierland roller coaster. In addition to a complete track replacement that is expected to make the ride smoother (and safely lower the height requirement to 38″), crews repainted several set elements, restored broken special effects, refreshed audio-animatronics, reimagined portions of the queue, and installed a brand-new Rainbow Caverns opening scene on the attraction. The new opening scene features glimmering stalagmites, phosphorescent pools, and hundreds of audio-animatronic bats.Months after Walt Disney World Resort shared a first look at the new opening scene of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, one Walt Disney Imagineer shared what Magic Kingdom Park guests can expect at the end of the ride.A Look at the Updated Finale SceneCredit: DisneyOn April 29, Walt Disney Imagineer Dan Flynn, who works in Executive Show Management, spoke with the media about the reimagined Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at the Magic Kingdom. BlogMickey reported that Flynn shared details about some glimmering new elements Walt Disney World Resort guests can expect to see on the reimagined ride.According to Flynn, Walt Disney Imagineers drew inspiration from a 2013 update to the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad queue, which introduced interactive elements to reduce boredom during long waits for Disney Park guests. That overhaul introduced pieces of gold in the queue, a bit of lore that Imagineers expanded on. They started with questions like: “Where did it come from? How did it get there? Why is the Big Thunder Mining Company constantly in the mountain?”Credit: DisneyNow, the finale scene of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will include some answers to those questions. According to Flynn: “As you cross your final hill, you’re going to enter a cave of lots of shimmering glimmer, and at last, you’ll see the mother lode of gold.”As riders admire the glimmering metal, the runaway train will be “pushed out of the mountain” as it grumbles, fighting back against those who aim to steal its rare minerals with an “ominous warning.” This verbiage is similar to earlier descriptions of the brand-new opening Rainbow Cavern scene, where the mountain reportedly grumbles in response to the miners inside it.The updated version of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad debuts at Magic Kingdom Park on May 3, 2026.Should Walt Disney World Resort overhaul any of its other existing attractions as it did with Big Thunder Mountain Railroad?
