LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Kentucky Derby 152 goes through Spendthrift Farm.Further Ado (Gun Runner) will carry Spendthrift's famed orange-and-purple silks seeking a second Kentucky Derby victory for the operation off the heels of a daylight win with a field-best 106 Beyer Speed Figure in the GI Toyota Blue Grass S.Spendthrift Farm's flagship sire Into Mischief, meanwhile, will have three chances at a fourth Kentucky Derby victory. He will be very well-represented by 4-1 morning-line favorite and GI Arkansas Derby winner Renegade (Into Mischief), GI Curlin Florida Derby winner Commandment (Into Mischief) and the GI Santa Anita Derby runner-up Potente (Into Mischief). The seven-time reigning champion general sire joined Bull Lea, Falsetto, Sir Gallahad III (Fr) and Virgil in the record books after Sovereignty (Into Mischief)'s triumph on the first Saturday in May last year.“I keep telling people this statistic,” Spendthrift Farm General Manager Ned Toffey said. “As the reigning, seven consecutive years leading general sire, the last time that was done was Bold Ruler in a stretch during the late '60s. The only other time its been done, you have to go back to Lexington in the 1870s. I think that's a good indication of the historical context that we're talking about for Into Mischief. It's really incredible and he's a horse that we paid $180,000 for at a 2-year-old in training sale (2007 OBS March Sale). He keeps getting better and better. He's a remarkable horse.”And this doesn't include the Spendthrift Farm-owned and Into Mischief-sired unbeaten 2025 champion 2-year-old colt Ted Noffey. The GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner and 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard' was diagnosed with bone bruising and taken off the Kentucky Derby trail in late January.“He's doing very well and is just starting back in a very light exercise,” Toffey said. “We're looking forward to a second part of the year with him.”He continued, “It certainly was disappointing, but at the same time, the horse had done so much and given us such a great ride last year that I think you just have to appreciate how special that was.”Still having 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard' Further Ado–a 20-length maiden winner at Keeneland and hero of the GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. at Churchill Downs last fall–waiting in the wings had to help ease some of the sting, too, right?“I will say that helped a little bit,” Toffey replied with a laugh. “We did have some discussions amongst ourselves like, 'When they go 1 1/8 miles or 1 1/4 miles, who's better?' Maybe we'll get to find all that out later this year.”Further Ado, a $550,000 OBS April breezer, kicked off his 3-year-old season for Brad Cox with a respectable second behind The Puma (Essential Quality) in the GIII Tampa Bay Derby. He showed no mercy in the Blue Grass, airing by 11 lengths.“He's a really nice horse,” Toffey said. “He took a couple of races to get going and he loves two turns. Numbers wise, I think he's got a good shot, obviously. The big question mark is, is he gonna bounce a little bit? You could say that he bounced when he went over to Churchill (for the Kentucky Jockey Club), but that was still good enough. If his bounce is good enough to win this one, that'll be ok, too.”Other Kentucky Derby rooting interests for the Spendthrift stallion roster include: Albus (Yaupon), Incredibolt (Bolt d'Oro) and 'Rising Star' Intrepido (Maximus Mischief).Click here for 'TDN's Kentucky Derby Special Edition,' featuring a profile on Renegade's co-owners and breeders Robert and Lawana Low and a horse-by-horse analysis of the entire field. The post Further Ado Tops Loaded Hand for Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky Derby appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
