Speaking during a Saturday morning address, Prime Minister Robert Abela said the Labour Party wants to expand its existing free fitness scheme to include more sports and physical activities.Abela explained that the current six-month free gym membership scheme was originally introduced to encourage young people to stay active and improve their wellbeing. However, he said a number of youths later told his team that they already take part in other forms of exercise and sport, and suggested that the Youth Fitness Support Scheme should also cover the activities they actually practise.According to Abela, that feedback made sense, and Labour is now proposing to widen the scheme so it applies to more disciplines beyond the traditional gym setting. If implemented, the move could mean support for young people involved in a wider range of activities, from organised sports to alternative fitness programmes. The proposal forms part of Labour’s wider campaign focus on health, wellbeing and quality of life ahead of the election. What do you think, should the free fitness scheme cover more sports and activities?•
