Crude Velocity Bests Englishman in Battle of ‘Rising Stars’ in Pat Day Mile

Wait 5 sec.

it was billed as a two-horse race and a superb renewal of the GII Pat Day Mile on the GI Kentucky Derby undercard did not disappoint. A pair of undefeated 'TDN Rising Stars, presented by Hagyard' featured in Crude Velocity (c, 3, Beau Liam–Sweetnsour Kitty, by Lemon Drop Kid) and Englishman (Maxfield), with the two prominent from the start. Englishman led the way up the chute as Crude Velocity got caught in traffic early before bullying his way through. Both making their stakes debut, the two linked up and looked each other in the eye after Englishman led his rival by about a half-length through a first quarter in :22.06 and a half in :44.20. On even terms, they threw down a ding-dong battle into the straight, but Crude Velocity put Englishman away in the stretch, pulling clear to win by at least three lengths. He got the mile in a new stakes record of 1:33.87, with everyone else running for third. Two-time winner Stop the Car (Maximum Security) got those honors.Crude Velocity debuted Mar. 7 at Santa Anita in a 6 1/2-furlong maiden, then came back to romp by 6 3/4 lengths against older horses in a Apr. 4 optional allowance over the same track and distance.O-CSLR Racing Partners LLC; B-La Ciega LLC (Ky.); T-Bob Baffert, J-Florent Geroux. The G2 Pat Mile lived up to the HYPE!CRUDE VELOCITY dueled down the stretch under jockey @flothejock for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert.A new stakes record final time 1:33.87. #TwinSpiresReplay pic.twitter.com/0uac8gYx7H— TwinSpires Racing (@TwinSpires) May 2, 2026The post Crude Velocity Bests Englishman in Battle of ‘Rising Stars’ in Pat Day Mile appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
