Englishman led the way up the chute as Crude Velocity got caught in traffic early before bullying his way through. Both making their stakes debut, the two linked up and looked each other in the eye after Englishman led his rival by about a half-length through a first quarter in :22.06 and a half in :44.20. On even terms, they threw down a ding-dong battle into the straight, but Crude Velocity put Englishman away in the stretch, pulling clear to win by at least three lengths. He got the mile in a new stakes record of 1:33.87, with everyone else running for third.
