Consider that glass ceiling shattered.Cherie DeVaux became the first female trainer to win the Kentucky Derby Saturday when GOLDEN TEMPO (c, 3, Curlin–Carrumba, by Bernardini) closed from the back down the center of the Churchill Downs stretch under Jose Ortiz at odds of 23-1.Quickly to the rear as the field stormed past the crowd for the first time, the son of Curlin had plenty of pace to close into as Japan's Six Speed (Not This Time) and So Happy (Runhappy) put up fractions of :22.68 and :46.44.Fanned out nearly to the parking lot with less than a furlong to run, Golden Tempo made a joint move outside of Renegade (Into Mischief) with longshot maiden Ocelli (Connect) also storming home. The trio hit the final strides together but it was DeVaux's trainee who had enough to push past for the history-making win. Renegade was second with Ocelli filling out the trifecta.Ortiz picked up the Derby/Oaks double as he was also aboard Always a Runner (Gun Runner) in Friday's GI Kentucky Oaks.Lifetime Record: 5-3-0-2.O/B-Phipps Stable and St. Elias Stable; T-Cherie DeVaux.
