Hugo Ekitike has made a fast start to life at Liverpool with three goals in three games, but Arne Slot has highlighted one key area where he wants his striker to improve. The Frenchman has taken to life on Merseyside in his stride so far, starting three games and showing off his finishing ability without delay. The 23-year-old’s £79 million move from Eintracht Frankfurt came in the middle of pre-season, and thus he remains a work in progress for the striker Slot is hoping to mould him into. And the next step for Ekitike is to adapt to “the intensity levels without the ball” so he can play a more influential role in Liverpool’s build-up.“I think he has already made a big impact in the attacking part of our game,” Slot assessed.“Not only scoring goals but also being part of build-up situations where he was someone that started the attack or was part of us starting an attack. “I’m talking about a difference a bit more than last season, although when Lucho played there, he was also a lot of times part of our build-up.“The most simple answer to what he can improve is his match fitness. I expect him to do a lot, a lot more without the ball than he already does, because he’s already working hard.“There he can improve, which is completely normal because he has to adjust from a different league, from a different playing style. Frankfurt pressed, but not as much as we try to do.“And then coming to a different country, coming to a different league, there’s a lot for him to handle.“And then we come back after the international break, it’s Champions League games added to that, where he was used to playing, I think, Europa League, which is also a good level but not as high as Champions League.“There is the main point of improvement, which is completely normal because he came a bit later in pre-season.“So to adapt to the intensity levels without the ball, I think there are small steps to make for him.”Ekitike has yet to complete 90 minutes for Liverpool, but his 82-minute stint at Newcastle was his longest to date, and his withdrawal prompted momentum to swing to the hosts. He will be given further time to adjust to his new environment and work on his fitness over the international break after his omission from France’s squad for their upcoming qualifiers.
