(Special Arrangement)Vidhi Kadam, 19, a national-level sprinter, died in a road accident after her two-wheeler was allegedly hit by a speeding garbage truck of the Surat Municipal Corporation on Saturday.The police arrested the garbage container driver who held a learner’s driving licence on charge of reckless driving.Vidhi Kadam, a second-year B Com student at Sir K P Commerce College in Surat, was a resident of Panas in the city.Her father, Santoshbhai, is a tailor by profession, and her elder brother runs a food court. She participated in a national-level short-distance running event in January 2025.Vidhi, who also works as a trainer, was going to her gym in the Bhatar area when the two-wheeler she was riding hit by an SMC garbage truck coming from the opposite direction. Vidhi, who sustained serious head injuries, was rushed to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared her dead. The police arrested the garbage container driver who held a learner’s driving licence on charge of reckless driving.The body was later sent to New Civil Hospital. Khaodara police lodged a complaint and initiated an investigation. After checking CCTV footage in the area, police arrested the driver, Girish Vadh (22). Police said they found a learner’s driver licence from Girish, who was working under contract.Khatodara police inspector R B Rabari said, “We have arrested the accused Girish Vadh under charge of reckless driving. He was on the way to dump garbage at Khajod. It was found that he conducted a learner’s driving license test at the Surat RTO.”Story continues below this adCondoling the death of the young sports talent, Veer Narmad South Gujarat University Sports Department in-charge officer Dhaval Chavda said, “She had won college-level 100 meters and 200 meters competitions at the junior level, and last year she broke the university record of Sarita Gaekwad, an Asian Games medal winner. She had also participated in the national-level competition in January 2025. In September, she was scheduled to participate in the national-level athletic event. Surat has lost a great athlete.”In a social media message, the Surat district Sports committee condoled the death of Vidhi.“She was the VSNGU (Veer Narmad South Gujarat University) record holder and a national player. She was known not only for her exceptional skills on the field but also for her vibrant spirit and dedication to the sport. She had recently made waves in the sports community, showing immense potential and determination.
