The Karnataka State Dr. Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University held a ‘mini convocation’ here on Saturday to recognise the performances of students who topped the junior, senior, and vidwat exams conducted by it.This was to encourage the students to continue pursuing and nurturing their interest in performing arts. At the special event, the varsity distributed certificates to 89 toppers who shared 117 medals among them.Nagesh Bettakote, Vice-Chancellor of the varsity, said that in the past, the examinations used to be conducted by the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board. However, since last year, the responsibility has been vested with the music varsity.A total of 12,089 students appeared for the exams across the State and other parts of the country in Carnatic, Hindustani, Bharat Natyam, Kuchipudi, and Kathak art forms, and various other musical instruments. ‘’We recognized 89 toppers for their exceptional performance and presented them with certificates and medals to encourage them to pursue their interest in the field of performing arts. Today’s event was like a mini convocation’’, said Mr. Bettakote.He said that students who have passed in first class from the senior and vidwat categories and wish to pursue undergraduate courses at the university, will be granted direct admission without the need for an entrance exam.These students, having undergone three years of intensive training under their gurus, are well-prepared for higher studies in the field of music and performing arts, said Mr. Bettakote.Renowned violinist Mysuru Manjunath and others were present at the event.Published - August 30, 2025 09:02 pm IST
