(AP)The prime minister of Yemen’s Houthi government, Ahmad Ghaleb al-Rahwi, was killed along with several ministers in an Israeli strike on the capital, Sanaa, the group’s news agency reported on Saturday, citing its political chief Mahdi al-Mashat, Reuters said.The Houthis said a number of others were also wounded in Thursday’s strike but gave no further details.The Israeli military said on Friday its fighter jets had hit a compound in the Sanaa area where senior Houthi leaders were meeting. It said the operation was aimed at the group’s chief of staff, defence minister and other senior officials.The statement added the attack was a “complex operation” supported by intelligence-gathering and air power. Israeli officials said they were still verifying the outcome.Mashat did not say whether the Houthi defence minister was among the casualties. He announced that Deputy Prime Minister Mohamed Moftah would take over the duties of prime minister.Rahwi became prime minister nearly a year ago but was seen as a figurehead, while decision-making lay with others in the Houthi leadership.According to Israeli security sources, the targets were senior Houthi officials gathered in several locations to watch a recorded speech by Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi.Story continues below this adThe Iran-aligned Houthis have carried out attacks on ships in the Red Sea, calling them acts of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. They have also fired missiles towards Israel, most of which were intercepted.
