Mohali: House charred in fire at Kharar flat, no loss of life reported

(Express photos by Jasbir Malhi)A major fire broke out on the third floor of SBP North Valley along Kharar-Landran Highway in Mohali in the wee hours on Saturday.According to reports, Bhupinder Singh, who works in a private job, was away at a gurdwara with his family when the incident occurred at around 4:45 am at his third-floor flat. On returning, he noticed flames in the balcony and attempted to douse the fire, but the firefighting pipes failed to supply water. The blaze turned fierce, causing a gas cylinder kept in the balcony to explode with a loud blast. Within moments, the entire house was engulfed in flames.Two young neighbours rushed in to help but despite their efforts, all household belongings were reduced to ashes. Fortunately, no loss of life was reported.Residents claimed that the fire brigade arrived nearly an hour and a half late, allowing the blaze to spread further and cause extensive damage.Avtar Singh, president of the SBP North Valley Residents Welfare Society, confirmed that two individuals sustained injuries while attempting to extinguish the fire. They were immediately rushed to Sohana Hospital for treatment.When contacted, fire officer Pankaj Rana stated, “We received the first call at around 5:30 am. Our fire tender was delayed due to a traffic jam on Landran Road, so we immediately dispatched another vehicle via Khuni Majra route and simultaneously requested assistance from Mohali.
