The hellish Alligator Alcatraz concentration camp has become a powerful symbol of the Trump administration’s cruelty. Located deep within the Florida Everglades, the jail is intentionally designed to torture those imprisoned there, who face brutal and unsafe living conditions while kept inside metal cages. Even by Trump standards, it’s considered a stain on America’s reputation, and many on both sides of the aisle breathed a sigh of relief when federal court judge Kathleen Williams ordered that it be closed and dismantled within 60 days on the basis that it’s “causing severe and irreparable damage to the fragile Florida Everglades” ecosystem. As of writing, the camp remains open, but reports are emerging of a camp “uprising” with desperate detainees joining forces to fight against the guards. According to phone calls from the detainees reported by Noticias 23, inmates began chanting “freedom!” after one received the tragic news that a relative had died: Chaos erupted, with squads of baton-wielding guards rushing in to indiscriminately attack groups of detainees, followed by teargas rounds being fired at them. Soon afterwards, the fire alarms were set off and began blaring continuously, and a helicopter was heard circling overhead. A witness explained: “People started screaming because a relative had died and they started shouting for freedom. At that moment a prison team came in and started beating everyone. Right now, it’s unrest and well, we have the helicopter overhead. Many bloody.Per detainee: pic.twitter.com/kZWxNb1uYz— Eric Lee (@EricLeeAtty) August 28, 2025 Another inmate frantically got the message out: “they’re mistreating us, they’re beating us, it’s the emergency alarm, please help us!” The Guardian quotes Workers Circle representative Noelle Damico, who is familiar with conditions and developments within the camp, as saying: “[An uprising] would not surprise me given the abuses that people have experienced.” Shut it down, shut it down! Meanwhile, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis seems to realize he’s sitting on a powder keg and has been frantically emptying the camp as quickly as he can, telling reporters on Wednesday that they’ve “increased the pace of the removals.” The plan is to abandon Alligator Alcatraz completely and relocate to a new camp in north Florida, which will apparently be dubbed the “deportation depot”. So, what has Alligator Alcatraz accomplished? It has underlined the sadism of Trump officials, wasted hundreds of millions of dollars, and achieved nothing except horror and misery.
