‘Didn’t throw phone, it slipped’: TMC MLA Jiban Saha sent to judicial custody till September 12 in SSC scam case

(PTI photo)The special ED court Saturday sent Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Jiban Krishna Saha to judicial custody till September 12. The legislator was arrested from his Murshidabad residence on Monday following raids in connection with the probe into the School Service Commission (SSC) recruitment scam in West Bengal.In a remand request submitted before the court, the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) counsel Bhashkar Prasad Banerjee had sought Saha’s judicial custody, citing some developments in the probe.Though Saha’s counsel Zakir Hussain did not apply for bail, he submitted, “We are dealing with an education scam. Some of the names in the first remand list have already got bail. I am a third-line agent. I have been summoned twice and have cooperated.”According to sources with the ED, a money trail of over Rs 1 crore has been traced to the MLA’s account. Further, the agency suspects that the money which Saha allegedly gained from the scam had been put into other businesses, including the purchase of potato bonds. According to ED sources, Saha has not been cooperating with the probe.While entering the court, Saha told reporters, “I did not throw the phone. I slipped and fell in the mud, and the phone slipped. No property has been bought in my aunt’s name. Earlier, the CBI had taken me into custody, now it is the ED. The videos that are circulating are all lies.”On Monday morning, when ED officers reached his residence in Burwan constituency, the MLA allegedly tried to escape by jumping from the first floor and scaling the boundary wall of the compound, but the ED arrested him.Saha has been arrested on allegations of corruption in the recruitment of assistant teachers carried out by the SSC. Central agencies have alleged that Rs 46 lakh was siphoned off via various accounts of the MLA’s relatives.Story continues below this adThe TMC leader had been arrested in April 2023 by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on similar charges before being released on bail. While in 2023 the legislator threw his mobile phone into a pond, this time he allegedly threw the device into a drain but it was recovered by ED officials after a thorough search.Saha’s aunt Maya Saha, a Trinamool councillor in Birbhum’s Sainthia, had appeared before the ED on Thursday after receiving a summons in connection with the case.In April this year, the Supreme Court upheld the decision to cancel the SSC recruitment process of 2016, citing irregularities.
