That run included a 19th and 20th record close for the benchmark index this year. A decline in semiconductor stocks after disappointing earnings countered largely favorable economic data this week. Market participants also digested an increasingly dramatic standoff between the Federal Reserve and President Donald Trump.Nvidia (NVDA), the world's largest chipmaker, highlighted the week with its quarterly report. Despite its results indicating that the artificial intelligence spending boom was still accelerating, investors fretted over its conservative revenue guidance and its assumption of no further sales of AI chips to China. Other chip bellwethers, such as Marvell Technology (MRVL), also failed to impress with their earnings. The economic calendar was packed this week, with fresh readings on growth and inflation in focus. A second estimate showed U.S. Q2 gross domestic product growth being revised upward to an annual rate of +3.3% from +3.0%. Meanwhile, the core personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index—widely seen as the Fed's preferred inflation gauge—came in line for July. The positive GDP revision and the largely tame PCE keep the Fed on track for an interest rate cut in September, according to the CME FedWatch tool.Speaking of the Fed, concerns over the central bank's independence swirled on Wall Street after President Trump attempted to remove Fed Governor Lisa Cook from the board. Cook fought back, filing a lawsuit that challenged the move. A hearing to decide whether Cook could keep her job while her lawsuit progressed ended with no ruling on Friday. For the week, the S&P 500 (SP500) slipped -0.1%. The blue-chip Dow (DJI) and the tech-heavy Nasdaq (COMP:IND) both fell -0.2% each.
