Now that the latest run of The Last Ronin comic book series has ended with “Re-Evolution”, TMNT fans are eager to know what’s happening with the live-action movie adaptation that was announced by Paramount Pictures early last year. The Last Ronin follows Michelangelo, the last surviving Ninja Turtle, as he embarks on a one-way mission to avenge the deaths of his brothers, Leonardo, Raphael, and Donatello, and his father, Master Splinter, in a futuristic and battle-ravaged New York City. The comic was a huge success when it launched in 2020. It spawned two follow-up series, merchandise, and will soon have a live-action film adaptation and a video game adaptation.Credit: Inside the MagicWe know that The Last Ronin movie is being produced by former head of DC Films Walter Hamada through his 18hz production company, with a screenplay by Tyler Burton Smith (2019’s Child’s Play, Boy Kills World), and that it’s apparently going to be R-rated.The game is being developed by Black Forest Games and will be published under THQ Nordic.Unfortunately, there has been little to no news on either project since their announcements, other than a few tidbits from the comics’ writers Kevin Eastman and Tom Waltz. Recently, however, the pair did discuss the upcoming installments at great length, proving that they’re both very much in active development, even though there are no release windows in sight.Credit: IDW PublishingThe Last Ronin Game UpdateIn an interview with IGN earlier this year, while discussing the final issue of “The Last Ronin II: Re-Evolution” and a future follow-up series, Eastman and Waltz were asked about the status of “The Last Ronin” game and The Last Ronin movie.“The video game was something that has been developed early on,” Eastman said. “Tom and I were brought in initially for looking at some of the concepts, looking at some of the development issues, and the things that were potentially happening there.”He continued: “There was a resting period, I think, or restructuring period. With the major developer, but I understand that, the last I heard from Nickelodeon, it’s back on track. So we hope to all share news in the future. We’ve got nothing definitive. We hope to all share news on the progress on the video game.”Credit: Nickelodeon / THQ Nordic / Black Forest GamesRelated: ‘TMNT: The Last Ronin’ Trailer BreakdownThe Last Ronin Movie UpdateAs for the movie, Eastman said that it’s still happening, too. “I have had conversations and shared some details with Tom on the discussions on a Last Ronin movie,” he said. “Hollywood is a very magical, confusing, challenging place as things develop.”He continued: “But some of the conversations I’ve had early on have been wonderfully positive, and they love what Tom and I have done. And I feel like, to quote the writer that I talked to a couple of times, he just loved what we did in The Last Ronin I, and said, ‘I just don’t want to be the guy that messes it up.’”“So they’re very sincere. They’re paying attention to what’s been done before, but we’ve got nothing specifically we could share. I wish we could. And I think we’ll hear stuff more in the future as things go along, but there is definitely a desire from Nickelodeon and Paramount to do, not only a video game, but a live-action movie, and I’ve been told in the R-rated space.”Credit: IDW PublishingRelated: R-Rated ‘TMNT’ Movie Everything We Know: Plot, Cast, Trailer, Release Date, and MoreThis year marks the 35th anniversary of the original film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990).
