Earlier this month, ByteDance, the Chinese company behind TikTok, listed two job openings on LinkedIn for roles in Gurgaon.The popular social media platform has been banned in India since June 2020, where it had over 200 million users.The move has raised questions about the company’s plans in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also set to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, beginning Sunday in Tianjin near Beijing.The advertised roles are Content Moderator (Bengali Speaker) – Trust and Safety, and Wellbeing Partnership and Operations Lead – Trust and Safety.The Content Moderator job requires fluency in English and Bengali, knowledge of internet regulations, and the ability to handle sensitive content. Responsibilities include developing security standards and managing policy-violating material under high-pressure conditions.The Wellbeing Partnership role requires over five years of project management experience and expertise in health and wellness. Duties include leading regional well-being programs, managing stakeholder communications, and ensuring vendor compliance, with up to 30% travel.The government banned TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps in 2020 as its bilateral ties with China reached a low. On June 15 of that year, Indian and Chinese troops clashed in Ladakh’s Galwan Valley, leading to the deaths of at least 20 Indian soldiers. The conflict along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) was the deadliest in 45 years and resulted in a military standoff.Story continues below this adAnnouncing the ban on June 29, the Ministry of Information and Technology had said it had received reports of “misuse” of some mobile apps. This included “stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorised manner to servers which have locations outside India”.ByteDance had laid off most of its India staff following the ban, but has maintained a limited presence for global operations.As of August 2025, the TikTok ban remains in place, with no official order to lift it.
