Surat: BJP workers barge into Congress office, tear posters and banners

With both BJP and Congress workers coming face-to-face raising slogans and pushing each other, police intervened and brought the situation under control.The protest was organised by the BJP against the alleged insulting statements made by a Congress leader about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mother at an event in Bihar a few days ago.The protest site is near the Surat city Congress office in Nanpura. The event was attended by Surat city BJP president Paresh Patel, former president Niranjan Janjmera, Mayor Daxesh Mavani, standing committee chairman Rajan Patel, BJP municipal councillors and a large number of workers dressed in black shirts.The BJP leaders and workers chanted slogans against Rahul Gandhi and burnt his effigy on the main road. A police jeep was stationed in the middle of a narrow lane, which leads to the Surat city Congress headquarters.The BJP leaders and workers broke the police barricade and reached the Surat city Congress office, chanting slogans against Rahul Gandhi. BJP workers tore cutouts and banners of Congress leaders. Congress leaders also chanted slogans against the BJP. Sources said that at one time, both leaders and workers came face-to-face and pushed against each other. Police intervened and controlled the situation.Talking to The Indian Express, Paresh Patel said, “We won’t tolerate such insulting remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his mother. We want Congress leaders and Rahul Gandhi to apologise.”Surat city Congress president Vipul Udhnawala said, “We have come to know that the BJP has organised a protest event at the Swami Vivekanand statue circle in Nanpura, which is near the Surat city Congress office.
