On Friday, after the flooding in the Tangri River in Ambala, Chief Minister Nayab Saini had instructed all Deputy Commissioners to survey the rivers and be fully prepared to tackle any emergency (X)The Haryana government Saturday issued an adverse-weather alert for rainfall in 12 districts. The Department of Agricultural Meteorology at Haryana Agricultural University has predicted light to moderate rain in Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Jind, Karnal, Rohtak, Gurugram, Nuh, Ambala, Panchkula, Yamunanagar, Palwal, and Faridabad.Meanwhile, the Markanda River in Shahabad, Kurukshetra was found overflowing during the day. The flow in the river was recorded at around 26,000 cusecs during the daytime. Water entered the Kathwa village, and flood-like conditions prevailed. Roads and fields got submerged, although water did not reach the densely populated areas. The district administration has issued alerts for Kathwa, Gumti, Patti Jamra, Mughal Majra, Malkpur, Kalsana, and Tangaur.In Faridabad, water from the Yamuna river entered the fields in the village of Chiras, near Manjhawali. The overflow of the Yamuna caused a breach in the embankments in several areas. In Sirsa, the Ghaggar was flowing near the danger mark. The ongoing construction of a bridge over the river got submerged. Villages located near the embankments have been put on alert by the district administration. Haryana’s former cabinet minister minister Ranjit Singh also toured the flood-affected villages and assured villagers of all necessary help.Additionally, the body of a young man was found in a canal in Fatehabad on Saturday. The identity of the deceased is yet to be confirmed. Both of his legs were severed, and his right hand had polio. However, the Tangri river appeared calm Saturday morning, and the water that had entered residential areas began to recede, allowing people to return to their homes.Cabinet Minister Anil Vij too toured the areas adjoining Tangri river in Ambala cantonment and Ambala city areas and issued directions to concerned officials to take necessary steps ensuring safety and security of the people.In the village of Brahmanwala, near Ratia in Fatehabad, drains overflowed causing waterlogging in the fields, resulting in submerged crops. Water entered the Rajkiya Senior Secondary School in Rajli village, Barwala, Hisar district flooding the classrooms and damaged crops in the nearby fields.Story continues below this adIn Morni area of Panchkula, heavy rains broke several paved roads of Narwar village forcing people to cross the overflowing causeways.A few villages are at risk of flooding. The government officials are monitoring the situation, while the villagers have also taken the situation in hand and are helping each other.Congress MP Kumari Selja too toured several flood affected areas. Criticising the state government and accusing it of lack of seriousness in addressing the flood-like situation, Selja said, “the Disaster Management Department did not have district project officers in 20 districts, and due to vacant positions, the disaster management budget could not be spent. State government has been totally negligent in protecting people from the risks of natural disasters”.However, Haryana government officials say that “the state government has deployed rescue teams and is coordinating with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) for evacuations in the worst-hit areas.
