Nick Woltemade looks set for a dramatic late move to Newcastle United, and Andy Brassell sees no downsides. The European football expert also believes that Woltemade has already made Alexander Isak look bad in the way he’s handled his future this summer.Woltemade is on Tyneside and is set to undergo a medical this morningtalkSPORT understands the Magpies have agreed a a club-record £69million deal with Stuttgart for the 23-year-old.That fee surpasses the Toon’s previous record purchase of Isak in the summer of 2022 from Real Sociedad for £63m.Ironically, the 6ft 6ins German could be replacing the wantaway Swede at St James’ Park.Woltemade is currently on Tyneside and is expected to complete the move imminently, with the Magpies trying to register him in time to play against Leeds United this weekend. The signing of Woltemade represents a huge coup for Newcastle, given Bayern Munich saw three bids rejected for the forward, and Brassell was full of praise for Woltemade.Speaking on The Transfer Insiders, he said: “I think he’ll be a really good addition, and it is really impressive how they’ve kept this on the down-low because they keep getting gazumped by other clubs.“Bayern were prepared to go all in for him. They were very, very keen. He was keen to go there. They wouldn’t get to the number that Newcastle have, and it has been a meteoric rise for him because he arrived on a free transfer from Werder Bremen, where he wasn’t a regular, and Stuttgart have turned him into this player in the space of less than a year.“If you are looking for someone who is quite a faithful replacement for Isak with a high upside, I am not sure you could have signed many better players than him.“He’s 6ft 6, but he’s not your typical target man. He likes to drop and dribble. When Bayern wanted him, and Bayern were very keen, they thought he could play with Harry Kane. I don’t know if there are many higher compliments than that because he’s got a very high football intelligence. He doesn’t lose the ball very often, and he’s constantly progressing.”Bayern rated Woltemade enough to see him as a partner and eventual successor for KaneGettyIsak has continued to inform Newcastle that he won’t play for them againGettyAnd while Isak has refused to play for Newcastle since the last day of the 2024/25 season, Woltemade has been a consummate professional. The forward has trained all pre-season and took part in the German Super Cup against Bayern.Stuttgart lost 2-1, but despite all the speculation around joining Bayern, Woltemade started the match.Meanwhile, Isak is nowhere to be seen for Newcastle. On that, Brassell said: “A lot of what Isak has done has harmed himself.“If he were to go to Liverpool tomorrow, he’s not fit to play. Whereas Woltemade, who desperately wanted to go to Bayern to the extent where he told his agent, ‘okay, I don’t care if Real Madrid are talking to you. I don’t care if Napoli are talking to you, I don’t want to go to any of those places, I want to go to Bayern’.“But he never sulked. He went away and worked on his game, and he turned up at the Super Cup and played brilliantly, even if it was in a losing battle against the best team in Germany and one of the best teams in Europe. “It is a lot of money, but if I was a Newcastle board member, I would be way more comfortable spending that sort of money on him than Jorgen Strand Larsen.“Strand Larsen is pretty close to the ceiling. Woltemade has progressed so much and has got a long way to go.” What does this mean for Isak?Newcastle chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan watched the Toon’s 3-2 defeat to Liverpool on Monday night before holding talks with Isak. The result of those talks was that the striker still wants to leave and join Liverpool. The Reds have seen one offer of £110m rejected, which the Magpies deemed to be low. They are yet to return with another bid, and don’t intend to unless given encouragement from Newcastle, talkSPORT understands.Yoane Wissa still wants the Newcastle moveGettyIsak also has no plans to reintegrate into the first-team squad until he is informed by Liverpool that a deal is impossible this summer. However, the Magpies are likely to need two strikers to sanction Isak’s exit, given Callum Wilson left upon the expiration of his contract in June.Yoane Wissa still wants to move to St James’ Park, but the Toon are yet to return to Brentford with another offer.Last week, Newcastle bid £40million for Wissa, which was swiftly rejected. But with a few days left in the window, Eddie Howe needs another forward as well as Woltemade or Isak is likely to stay until at least January.
