(AP/File Photo)The US State Department announced Friday that it is denying and revoking visas for members of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) and the Palestinian Authority (PA) ahead of September’s United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), according to a statement on Friday.“The Trump Administration has been clear: it is in our national security interests to hold the PLO and PA accountable for not complying with their commitments, and for undermining the prospects for peace,” the statement said. The statement stressed that members “must consistently repudiate terrorism”, pointing to the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on southern Israel. The move raises doubts over whether Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will be able to attend and deliver his address at the annual gathering in New York. This decision comes after the US imposed sanctions in July on PA officials and PLO members, contrasting with steps taken by other Western nations that are edging closer to recognising Palestinian statehood. However, the State Department clarified that the PA’s mission to the UN would remain unaffected by the new restrictions, without providing further details. However, shortly after the announcement, Palestinian UN envoy, Riyad Mansour said: “We will see exactly what it means and how it applies to any of our delegation, and we will respond accordingly.”(With inputs from Reuters)Stay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on Instagram© IE Online Media Services Pvt LtdTags:palestineUS visa
