Since its debut in 1989, The Simpsons has remained one of television’s most influential and enduring comedies. Created by Matt Groening, the satirical look at suburban America has aired over 750 episodes, spawned a theatrical film in 2007, theme park attractions at Universal Studios, and has become a pop-culture institution recognized around the world. Now streaming in full on Disney+ following the company’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019, the most famous family in Springfield has continued to evolve across decades.Credit: 20th Century StudiosThe Simpsons‘ History in 3D AnimationBut for years, fans have wondered when The Simpsons would finally make the leap into full 3D animation — something the series briefly experimented with in the ‘90s during Treehouse of Horror VI’s “Homer³” segment, a Twilight Zone-inspired episode that sent Homer into a digital dimension in which he becomes a 3D-rendered version of himself.Of course, there’s also “The Simpsons: Hit & Run” — one of many video game titles but the holy grail of nostalgia for fans of Springfield’s many pixelated adventures.Released in 2003, the hilarious open-world parody of “Grand Theft Auto” let players speed through the town in Homer’s pink sedan, smack vending machines for coins, and outrun Chief Wiggum in frantic police chases. It was chaotic, colorful, and pure Simpsons, and gave fans another taste of what life in Springfield would be like in 3D. To this day, players still share mods, remakes, and petitions begging for an official reboot of the popular 2003 title.Credit: 20th Century Studios / DisneyRelated: Disney Takes Steps to Bring The Simpsons to Theme ParksA New Simpsons Reboot Has ArrivedNow, that dream of seeing The Simpsons brought to life in high-definition 3D has become a reality.
