On Sunday, November 2, Six Flags America welcomed guests for the final time. The permanent closure came approximately six months after Six Flags Entertainment Corporation announced plans to sunset the 50-year-old Six Flags theme park and Hurricane Harbor in Bowie, Maryland.Credit: Six FlagsKnown as the “Thrill Capital of D.C.,” Six Flags America opened as a drive-through safari called “The Wildlife Preserve” in 1974. It closed after just two years. In 1978, the park opened under new ownership as “Wild Country”–unfortunately, that iteration of the park only lasted through 1980.In 1981, the property once again reopened as “Wild World,” and slowly added theme park rides and other attractions over the next ten years. In 1992, Premier Parks purchased Wild World and renamed it “Adventure World.” By then, most of the animal exhibits had disappeared.Credit: Six FlagsFinally, in 1998, Six Flags purchased Adventure World, and it’s been known as “Six Flags America” ever since. Sadly, that decades-long legacy came to an end on Sunday.Following Hurricane Harbor, which welcomed its final guests earlier in the season, Six Flags America closed its gates for the final time on November 2, 2025. Longtime fans flocked to the park to say goodbye, flooding attraction lines and restaurants for one last chance to enjoy the place many spent summers, fieldtrips, or weekend family vacations. Some carried shopping bags loaded with merchandise marked 85% off.William Craig and his children traveled from Martinsburg, West Virginia, for one final visit to the park on Sunday.Credit: Six Flags“For me it’s about the personal memory of when I separated from my ex-wife. … It was a way to bond with my kids,” Craig told WTOP News.Craig’s 14-year-old son, Johnny, told WTOP that “his favorite part of coming to Six Flags America was spending time with his dad.”Six Flags America posted the following statement on its Instagram page:Thank you, Six Flags America fans, for 50 years of family fun.
