Around 50 families are linked to the Haat through self-help groups” (X/@DrManikSaha2)Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha Sunday announced a financial grant of Rs 50.25 lakh to promote livelihood scope for families associated with the ‘Sanskriti Haat’.The Sanskriti Haat is a project of the Bangla Sanskriti Balay, a Bengali socio-cultural organisation active in West Bengal, Bangladesh, Tripura and Assam. The Haat is held every Sunday at Senpara in Nandannagar under the West Tripura district. The first Sanskriti Haat was inaugurated on December 10, 2023, by CM Saha, and the 100th edition of the Haat was held this Sunday.Speaking at the Haat, Saha said the fund would be disbursed through the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM).Lauding the Haat, the chief minister said, “It provides not only entertainment but also self-reliance. Around 50 families are linked to the Haat through self-help groups.”The Sanskriti Haat is reminiscent of the iconic Sonajhuri Haat in West Bengal’s Shantiniketan, where members of local communities sell handmade clothes, clay toys, and bauls perform folk songs, among others.At the Sanskriti Haat in Tripura, biyer geet or musical pieces traditionally sung during Bengali weddings are a crowd favourite.
